Recently there was a good debate on Pittsburgh's peer cities (which I thoroughly enjoyed reading). So what are Harrisburg PA's peer cities?

IMO they would be Trenton NJ, Albany NY, and Lancaster PA. What do you think?

Considering Harrisburg is the PA state capital with only 8 square miles of land, I am more interested in comparing Urban Areas here. Harrisburg urban area packs a punch as it also includes Hershey and Carlisle. Feel free to put whatever spin you want on this comparison. Also a ranking of cities that are 1, 2 leagues above and 1, 2 leagues below would be interesting.

It's kind of hard to compare Harrisburg to other cities. I always considered Harrisburg, Lancaster, and York to be three cities that create a triangle of suburbanization.

I recommended a Harrisburg/York/Lancaster regional sub-forum be created years ago, and that dead Harrisburg forum is the result.

I've noticed that West Virginians are very active in all of their forums. Pennsylvania threads outside of Pittsburgh and Philadelphia are extremely slow.

I presume we're comparing upon the basis of urbanized areas (not metro areas) vs. just the city limits?

I think Trenton and Lancaster would be good peer cities. York, too. Albany? Not so much. The Capital District (Albany/Schenectady/Troy) is much larger than Harrisburg, and it feels like it. Binghamton/Vestal/Endicott along the Southern Tier of New York is like a half-step below being a peer of Harrisburg. Allentown/Bethlehem/Easton is a half-step above.

Maybe Frederick, MD could be a peer city of Harrisburg. Winchester, VA is growing like gangbusters, and I could see that being a true peer city of Harrisburg by about 2030 or so. I think Charleston, WV is a close peer city when it comes to city proper vs. city proper. Charleston's urbanized area would be a half-step below that of Harrisburg. Same with Huntington, WV. Youngstown, OH, too. Also Erie, PA.

Trenton and Lancaster are good ones. Albany is larger. I've been there, and it really does look and feel a lot like Harrisburg though. It is the capital of NY which is a bigger deal than being capital of PA. York and or Lancaster might become part of the Harrisburg UA someday (2030/40?) and that would make it more comparable and maybe even larger.
Frederick MD UA is actually rather tiny, it only seems much larger than it actually is because it has massive city limits and orbits DC. It is on the up and up but not quite there yet.
Syracuse, Toledo, and Knoxville might also be good peers for Harrisburg?
What cities are 1 solid step above Harrisburg - not just a half? I'd say Raleigh and Richmond?
