I grew up in Schuylkill County. I think it has its good points and I'm not going to complain about it, because I grew up there and trashing it would be a bit of self-hatred, I think. However, if you are not from the area and are moving-there are so, so many wonderful places to move in this country. Schuylkill County would be the last on my list.

Default Tremont

The borough of Tremont is a friendly community in Schuylkill County. There are scenic walks in the woods, natural trout fishing streams, and many recreational activities. There is a commnity pool, two senior centers, a community band, seven churches, two community centers, a performing arts center, a future YMCA, and several stores and ambulances. Also there are playgrounds and parks. Visit these websites for more details.

Sorry, but Tremont is a dying town. It's a dump, if you ask me. The main bridge into town has been closed down for years because they can't afford to fix it and you have to take a roundabout way on side streets to get into town. The one red light in town has been broken more often than not when I've driven through. The condition of the streets is horrible. The only stores I can think of are a flower shop, dollar store and a craptastic mini mart. If it's after 9 pm and you need something, you're screwed. The "friendly" residents drove out the owner of the grocery store because he was middle-eastern, so that store is closed now, as far as I know. There is a pizzeria. Tremont is the last place that I'd move to, unless of course, you're looking for a remote town with no conveniences.

What is going on with race-relations in Shenandoah? There was that major beating of that Hispanic man in the street that was allegedly "racially motivated, " and this comes on the heel of some other racial issues plaguing that part of our area. Is Schuylkill County still living in the lynch mob days or what?

This is a horrible incident, but I don't think it's representative of the rest of Schuylkill County.

Based on what I've heard from family, nobody seems to know with 100% certainty yet about whether or not the incident was completely racially-motivated. That area of Shenandoah had gone downhill and was more or less an area where drug deals and other shady things were known to occur. The fight could have been something related to that and then maybe somewhere along the way someone started shouting racial slurs -- who knows.

Either way, I'm not trying to dismiss the fact that someone was killed. It's definitely a tragedy. However, I do think it's a little premature to conclude that this happened strictly because of race.

The bridge that is closed is closed due to penndot not allowing the borough to do it themselves for a lower cost without risking safety, and it is not the main bridge into town. The main way into Tremont is through US Rt. 209 and there are no detours on that highway. Furthermore, it was a teen who drove out the market owner because of a feud. I will admit there is a problem with the local youth but many of the middle age and older residents are very nice people who take great pride in their community.
Also, the borough may be in imperfect condition but that is not to say it is a bad place. Most of the side streets have been repaved and there are more establishments than you have listed. There is the Tremont Movie Theater Cafe, Mancino's Pizza, Behm's Resturant, an American Legion, Pribilla's Hareware Store, a Gun Club, the Corner Bar, two Senior Centers, a Free Masons lodge, a new Veterans Park, a dance studio, a community pool, a YMCA, a Family Dollar, multiple industies, a community hall, an auditorium, a nursing home, an apartment complex for older residents, multiple hair salons/barber shops, a Historical Society, a botique store, a convenience store, a community band, seven churches, and multiple other establishments in the surrounding little towns. There is also a fire company, an EMS, two playgrounds, the Kids R Kids Daycare center, and a library
Just because the town isn't "pretty" doesn't mean it isnt a nice place to live. I will admit it is in a depressed state but that could change over time. The work of citizens has been improving the town over the years. I would love to live in Tremont because of the beautiful mountain walks, simple small town living, and all the events that are held each year. Do some research and don't judge the town by a drive through. Get to know the place and find out its inner beauty. Learn the history, get to know the residents, and get involved. If you find out everything, then and only then, can you make an opinion that is appropriate.

Oh yea, the Red Light is not broken nor has been for a long period of time.

Default We are about to make our move

I am terribly worried by our upcoming move to the area. My husband got his final orders yesterday and so we are now in the official process of organizing our move. He has to report there on August 4. My husband is a military officer who will be working at the Reserve command in Schuylkill Haven. I am a counselor. We have a three year old daughter.
My biggest worry is that we are a mixed couple. I am half Spaniard and half Puerto Rican and have the strongest Latino accent around. It is charming up here but I have the feeling it will be everything but charming in that area.
We are not considering buying a home because first of all we will be there only three years and we have been unable to sell our home here. We own two homes and have become landlords because of our frequent moves. I am not doing it this time.
Talking about finding a place to live.. The military offers very little information about relocation to the area. We are having a difficult time locating properties to rent with a decent drive to my husband's work.

Given the recent racial events I have been considering to lead a marriage apart for three years and just deals with visits to the area... Just a thought. I don't want to live in a racially tense place. I could not expose my daughter to that kind of hatred.

Schuylkill Haven is safer than up in the Shenandoah and Mahanoy City area for latino people. The best area to consiter would be in the southern end of the county where so many illegal imigrants havent moved to. There is less tension in the southern half of the county (e.g. Pine Grove, Schuylkill haven, Orwigsburg, Deer park). Its not to say there won't be some discomfort from the locals at first (its unusual for them when anyone moves to their area because it is so rare), but they will over time grow to like you and your family. Most of the people are nice and good it jusy unusual to them why anyone would want to live in there area. It is an economicly depressed area with a bleak future.
The norhtern half of the county is in a much worse state then the southern half and it has had trouble with the illegal imigrants. To move there, I would never reccomend it. Best of Luck.

htttp://www.freewebs.com/tremontpa, for more information on one community about 12 miles from Schuylkill Haven

Also try yahoo for real estate listings. Look up these towns, Deer Park, Orwigsburg, Cressona, Schuylkill Haven, Pine Grove, Pottsville, Tremont, and Palo Alto. All of these communities are in the lower half of the county and all except for Pottsville have less than 5,000 people living in them.
