I need to purchase a second (rural) home to use as an escape in the south-central region of Pennsylvania.

I am single, no kids, no ties, no nothing. Field’s wide open. As this will be not my primary residence, it can be as rural as it can be. And of course…cheap! Cheap. Fixer uppers are very welcome.

Are there any rural places left? I understand it’s had some Baltimore/DC spillovers in the last few years. To reach PA, I go via I-81 or US-15 which both are easily accessible. So I’d like to find a stomping ground somewhere around these areas. All I know I’m near Hanover. Thanks for any/all of the help!

S. Pennsylvania has been ruined by suburban spill over.

its gonna be hard to find something cheap in southcentral pa. you may want to look into the mcconelsburg area. Also mount union and huntingdon, though those are more central than southcentral. As you move east towards chambersburg/shippensburg, house prices start to increase. stay west of chambersburg and house prices are lower and it is more rural.

i would recommend looking into Huntingdon, Mifflin, and Franklin counties also. check realty sites and then spend some time driving around. How much land do you want? how big of a house do you want or need? this is a beautiful area and not too far from the bigger cities. i'd love to have a get away residence in any of these counties.

Default South Central PA

If you want rural I would consider the Broad Top area. It is a bit west from where your looking. The town of Saxton has a lot of nice people.

Thanks for the recommendations, everyone! Looking at these counties - Huntingdon, Mifflin, & Perry. I have looked a few in Franklin. Time to look again for new listings. Isn't Perry by Harrisburg?

I see I'll have to expand my requirements. I was hoping somewhere within an hour's drive, but now I'll go in any direction that will not take over 2 hours to drive. Harrisburg is an hour and half away from me. So anywhere up to Harrisburg and then some. Saxton sounds nice, will look up that town.

Half an acre or larger is the minimum. Over an acre if possible. I'll keep some bulky junk and a backup vehicle or two on the property. The house can be whatever it is as long as it's not a mobile home and is above 500 sq. ft. It can be any age, too. Ulitites are not important, but well water would be nice.
