But with the agency’s 600 state-owned liquor stores still closed indefinitely as part of the Wolf Administration’s stop the spread efforts, there’s probably no quick end in site to a related Pennsylvania pandemic phenomenon - steady streams of cars and trucks bearing Pa. license plates crossing the state lines for the nearest liquor store.
...
Pennsylvania is an absolute outlier in its decision to close liquor stores. While bars, restaurants and taverns that sell liquor by the drink have been closed throughout the Eastern Seaboard, liquor stores have remained open as “essential businesses” in all of the states that ring our borders: New York, Maryland, New Jersey, Ohio, West Virginia and Delaware.
...
That hasn’t stopped many Pennsylvanians from wondering why, if it’s deemed safe enough for them to physically line up to buy wine and beer at a grocery store, they can’t be trusted to do the same at the state’s liquor stores, which happen to hold the monopoly on distilled spirits sales.

Its an idiotic decision and we need to join the 21st century instead of having these puritanical liquor laws in this bass-ackwards state.

"The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board was established in conjunction with the 21st Amendment and the repeal of prohibition. In 1933, just four days before the sale of alcohol became legal in Pennsylvania, the Board was officially organized. Upon its creation, Governor Gifford Pinchot stated that the purpose of the Board was to "discourage the purchase of alcoholic beverages by making it as inconvenient and expensive as possible." - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pennsy..._Control_Board

I had an in-law who was a Pa “State Store” manager until he retired. Don’t know how it is now but cracked bottles of liquor were to be dumped out and the bottle kept and the liquor to be credited. Many bottles of expensive liquor were “cracked” and “dumped”. I’m sure MadDog20/20 bottles were never “cracked”.

Im with OP on this. It’s laughably stupid the PA liquor board is easily the worst aspect of this state. Puritanical nonsense has no place in modern society. I hope the expensive, ineffective, and unnecessary PA liquor board goes away.

By the way, for those saying you can buy beer, good beer is expensive relative to liquor. Also not everyone can drink beer due to the gluten, etc.

Have any of you actually lived in a state without these restrictions? The booze is far cheaper, the selection is much better, and we don’t need to go to special checkouts and be treated like children.

Don’t think anyone is arguing against the PA Liquor Boards practices. It’s ridiculous and always has been, however, everyone knew this was going to happen and had the opportunity to stock up. There’s also online liquor sites that ship.

They are very expensive! Not everyone had the opportunity to stock up...did you see the lines that last day? Not very good social distancing. Quite frankly, it was reported that the online stores would stay open. Then without warning, they were closed with the stores.

I just wanted to mention the employees didn't know their stores were closing the day before they announced it. I know a few employees....well most probably already knew I would.

If it’s too expensive, drink less, or drink cheaper beer. Poor planning isn’t anyone’s fault but their own, and it’s obvious that many could care less about social distancing when it comes to getting liquor. Quite frankly, if one is so concerned with liquor, they shouldn’t take the chance of not stocking up.

Did you share your concerns with the LCB?

It’s truly hilarious. If one has a drinking problem or drinks an excessive amount, simply stock up, pay more, or adapt to something else.

Agree but is that possible? I dont have the background to know but if someone has serious drinking problem can you just switch to beer? Many I know with serious drinking problems, to say stock up or pay more is not an option. They wait for the next paycheck to buy. Not trying to get into an ethical argument of too bad or whatever. I just feel that you are opening up the potential for these people to have potential health issues from withdrawal or additional crime if they feel desperate. Literally every other state see the same concerns and allows.
