You could take 476 north to Scranton and jump on I-81 to I-380 south to I-84 that would take you all the way into Massachusetts. It would be a lot longer and I have no idea how much road construction you would encounter. You might be able to check it out on our PennDOT website?

Take the northeast extension of the PA Turnpike (I-476) to I-81 to I-88 to the NY Thruway (I-90) then the Mass Pike to I-495 South to I-95 North to the S. Main Street Exit, which will take you to Sharon. That route avoids the traffic around NYC.

The mileage would be considerably longer than if they took I-84. They could still end up with traffic around Albany and Springfield. Although they would avoid the Waterbury and Hartford traffic. Do we know if any of these routes have serious road construction delays?

If the OP belongs to the AAA, their online "trip tiks" have construction information.
