We have a 12 room home with quite a few fragile items that will require detail and special care when packing. I'm not certain how much I should pay my packer. Do I pay by the hour or the room? I'm open to hearing your experiences....I want to be fair but not taken advantage of.

Just get some quotes..... Call up three different companies, tell them what you have and ask for a price.

We have been packed and moved by professionals 5 times, and I can tell you that whatever they charge is well worth it!

We have never paid because the moves have all been corporate relocations, but I can tell you that each time it was a great experience. They come in with 3 or 4 guys, and whip through your house packing everything in sight!

In all of our 5 moves, only one thing ever got broken - a TV, which one of the guys dropped (we were paid for it though).

At the end of the move, I always tip the lead guy $100, and each of the others $75 - oh, and I provide lunch and snacks each day. Well deserved - these guys work hard.

Best of luck with your move!
