We plan to relocate in the Montgomery county and at first sight houses around Pottstown are the most affordable for us (+/- 250 K). How about schools , criminality, is Pottstown safe ? Is it a good choice ? Are there better places for our budget ? How long is it take to go to Philly on working days ? Is there a lot of traffic on the 422 in the morning ?
Any advices are welcome

It's a pretty far commute.

As for school districts/safety, obviously depends on where you're talking about. "Around Pottstown" could mean Pottstown, Pottsgrove, Owen J Roberts School Districts.

greatschools.net is a good resource for checking school performance.

Pottstown, like many places, has its good, fair, and bad parts. The atmosphere is overwhelmingly blue-collar. Like so many other Pennsylvania towns, it has gone through some economic decline following a boom in the 1950s because of some businesses (Mrs. Smith pies, Firestone, etc.) either shutting down or relocating. There has been some notable gentrification in the recent past, but it clearly is a work in progress. With regard to crime, Pottstown has its fair share, especially involving some gangs. However, I believe that has recently improved. The school system is not necessarily up to par, but you can certainly live around Pottstown and send your children to markedly better school districts (Owen J. Roberts, Boyertown, Spring-Ford, etc.), and you can find cheap real estate in these areas, too. Commuting to Philly on 422 does not have to be tedious if you leave early enough. P-town is about 40 miles from Philly, but I would allow for no less than an hour on any given morning. Good luck in your search!

well I would look at collegville and royersford before pottstown. 1 of the reasons pottstown is cheaper is the area isn't as nice there are definately some bad areas there. but it definately is an area of expansion and because of the cheaper housing cost more people are looking that way. also 422 is a busy road especially if you are commuting into philly or the king of prussia area every day.

The actual downtown part of Pottstown is not that great. The surrounding areas are fairly nice.

Thanks to all for the info. About "around Pottstown" I mean in a range of 5 miles. Real estates in Pottstown are quite attractive, that's the main reason for us. Our budget is limited & 250K is the max. we would like to spend on a house (age less than 5 if possible) and Which is the best/safer part of Pottstown ? Is the good elementary school ? Any suggest
