I noticed this in a couple of articles and thought it would be of interest to others, as it is very encouraging news for our overall state economy. It's an exciting sign that PA is successfully transitioning and diversifying its primary industries:

HARRISBURG — Pennsylvania's efforts to develop and diversify its biotechnology business sector made it the No. 1 state in the nation in the latest Business Facilities magazine study, Gov, Edward G. Rendell recently announced.

"We have laid the groundwork to keep Pennsylvania No. 1in biotech," Rendell said. "The commonwealth's support for the entire continuum of biotech initiatives, from research and development and product commercialization to bringing mature companies to our state, is paying dividends, even in these uncertain economic times."

Rendell announced the ranking during the recent groundbreaking in Montgomery County for the new North American headquarters of Almac, a provider of research, development and manufacturing services for pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries worldwide.

That is wonderful news. Also, locally speaking, Windber Research Institute is expanding and has contracts with national connections (Mayo/Walter Reed) and phase one of our "tech park" in downtown Johnstown is almost complete and promises to draw more bio-med companies to our area as well.
