I agree with taking Route 30. (I miss the ship hotel.)

Niagara Falls - When in Erie you are a 2 hour drive away.

The view is best from the Canada side.

Unfortunately, PeterRabbit, it burned down a few years back and has not been rebuilt. It's a shame. I loved to stop there when we'd travel to Maryland.

Wow! Never thought I would have so many great tips! I´ll start marking my googlemaps all the tips and doing a good plan! Thanks!!! If anyone has more tips please let me know!!

I´m more in knowing the "little charming city" than tourists crowded type.. Like, I prefer the Christmas lights, ice skating etc then going to the Liberty Statue/Empire. Or a good village with nice farm markets over historic monuments.

So basically I´ll start with this: NY to Philly (newtown/doylestow/yardley) then up to Scranton - rout to Erie (Scranberry tip) - down to Pittsburgh then mams1559 tip (rte 30) back to Philly (KOP, etc).

Default Extra tip..

When going from Erie to Pgh... if you're interested in small town, try going straight down US Rte 19 instead of Interstate 79. They parallel each other, but 19 goes through the towns along the way instead of bypassing them.

Just a thought. Happy motoring

But you're skipping the Lehigh Valley! :0 You can't choose Scranton and Erie over Bethlehem can you? Lehigh Valley Convention and Visitors Bureau - The Official Travel Resource for Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton, PA Bethlehem is especially attractive in the early winter when it gets decked out for Christmas Attractions in the Christmas City - www.ChristmasCity.org (http://www.christmascity.org/attractions/default.asp - broken link) and earns it's name as The Christmas City.

Not to veer too wildly off topic ... other than to say that U.S. 30 is one wild, twisting ride over the Alleghenies!!! ... but the signs promoting The Ship always cracked me up: "See three states!!!" Well ... BFD. All those mountains looked alike. How were you supposed to know which ones were in West Virginia, and which ones were in Maryland???

As toobusytoday said, Bethlehem is definitely worth a visit as well. If you take I-476 northwestward from Philadelphia to Scranton, the Lehigh Valley sits smack dab in the middle.
