I am not one to go camping, in fact, roughing it is not my thing AT ALL, but I have these three little boys who would just love to spend a weekend at a lake catching fish, bugs and just running through the woods!

Can someone recommend a lake in PA (preferrably on the east side since we're in the Lehigh Valley) where we could go for a long weekend? I would like to stay in a cabin or some other type of house - it doesn't have to be full of amenities, but the more the better.

Thanks in advance!

You could try the state parks; a number of them have cabin rentals. Lake Jean at Ricketts Glen State Park comes to mind. It's not too far from the Dallas/Wilkes-Barre area.

Also look into campgrounds with lakes. KOAs usually have nice cabins. There's a nice KOA near Allentown. Go to Camping and Campgrounds - KOA Kampgrounds of America, Inc. and enter your state and it brings up a map. Some of their cabins are rustic and some have bathrooms and kitchens.

Ricketts Glen, which is about a half-hour northwest of Wilkes-Barre, is an excellent suggestion. There is a very scenic trail that runs beside a series of waterfalls, one of which is even 94' high! Lake Jean is very quiet and secluded. It's probably one of the few state parks left in NEPA that hasn't been overrun yet with NYC/NJ tourists in the summer. I go there every once in a while myself just to relax and unwind. From the Lehigh Valley you'd take I-476 north to the Wilkes-Barre exit, and then take Route 115 North to Route 309 North (through Wilkes-Barre) to Dallas. In Dallas hang a left onto Route 118 West (near the new Yalick Farms planned community) and Ricketts Glen will be about 20 minutes ahead on your right. It would probably be about an hour and forty-five-minute drive from you.

My sons have both camped at Ricketts Glen with their boy scout troop and loved it. I've heard that there is great hiking and beautiful waterfalls. Lots of deer though, so make sure you have insect protection against deer ticks. That's probably true at any park though. Here's the state park camping link for our end of the state: Pennsylvania State Parks - Northeast Pennsylvania Mountains - PA DCNR We camped at Hickory Run once and I think visited Knoebels http://www.knoebels.com/ from there. Better then Dorney!
