I don't know if they've done it in other areas, but Weis in Selinsgrove and at the mall removed their self checkout lines. Does anyone know why?

We run in a lot for milk or bread or chips. It's much cheaper than the convenience stores, and we could always get a self checkout line without much of a wait.

The other night I ran in for 2/$6 Wavy Lays and the express lane wasn't open so I had to "cool my jets" for about 15 minutes behind two fully loaded carts!! Arrgh!!! How annoying!!

Strange. I always thought the self checkouts saved stores money. I'll have to check our local Weis to see if they did that as well.

PS: Weren't the chips worth the wait?

LOL- they weren't even for me. They were for my husband's lunches through the week. He actually prefers Ruffles but we buy whichever ones are on sale.

When we first discovered the lack of self checkouts, he was in the Selinsgrove store for a half gallon of milk. My husband is not known for his patience and there were long lines at the checkouts so he sat the milk down and left. We went to the mall store and they still had the self checkouts but they were closed. However, the lines there were shorter and he got his milk. The next time we went back to that store, the self checkouts were completely gone there too.

We have a HUGE Giant near us that I've only been in once to use the restroom in the front of the store. It's really an overwhelming store although I know many people like it (my 18 yo son included). They still have self checkouts. We may be switching stores over this. I hope Weis really reconsiders their decision.

Let me know if it's the same in your area too.

I've seen them shut down fairly often in Hummelstown but not permanently - of course I don't go there every week (generally prefer Giant) so maybe they did while I haven't been there.

Weis was the only store I used the self-checkouts in, I hate bagging it myself and had trouble with the scan and self-bag scanner with a mind of its own at Giant so other stores I just stand in line.

I refuse to go to the self checkout lanes unless they are going to offer me a discount for doing their job.

Good point.

I wonder if the day will come when we'll have to unload our own merchandise from the trucks as well.

I love self checkouts. I can bang it out faster, especially since I usually have less than $50 worth of stuff. At my Weis there is usually a girl around that is responsible for the self checkouts and she'll help bag your groceries as they come down the belt.

For me it's a lot easier and quicker and if my local Weis got rid of theirs I'd complain.

Wal Mart needs to use theirs more as it's always a drag waiting forever in Wal Mart lines with someone with those overfilled carts with 150 corndogs and 23 boxes of Totinos. And then they've got their food stamps and welfare checks that take forever and a day to process.

Selinsgrove Weis closed the self checkout because they were losing money while operating them

I use self-checkout lines if I find myself having to use a credit card that's not my own, because otherwise they'll ask for my ID, and since the name doesn't match, they won't let me purchase, even if I'm doing somebody else a favor.
