Anyone know anything about Hawley? I was just looking on a local real estate site and came up with several houses that would fit right in with our thoughts of buying a second home, getaway type place up yonder and noticed that on some of the ads they mentioned "the historic town of Hawley". Can anyone address what that represents? Any pics of the towni? Opinions?

We have gone from leaving Florida and looking all over NC , Ga, then back to Fla and we've pretty much decided to just keep our house here and look into the possibilities of buying a second house in Pa. Why Pa and not say NC?

Because the added thought is to be close enough to NYC ( no more than say 2 1/2 hours ) to dive in for a weekend, or even a long day and get outta there, back to a preferably wooded , quaint area of Pa. Spend a few months maybe then drive back to Fla. We thought of the Hideout in Wayne Cnty but those little chalets seem to be way higher than just a few years ago ( am I wrong? ) We have a certain number in our heads and while we haven't ruled out the Hideout at all, I'm looking elsewhere too.

And these listings popped up. Last time we were up there we drove into Greentown and stopped to buy apples and fresh vegetables at a little roadside stand. It was so quaint and nice we can't stop thinking about it

Hi Mr. Tudo, if you make a left out the front gate of The Hideout and drive all the way to lake Wallenpaupack, then hang another left, it brings you into Hawley. In my opinion, there is nothing much there. They have about a 2-3 block 'Main St', nothing much there, no drug store, no gas station, no convenience store. My best picks of the area would be The Settlers Inn, a well known bed and breakfast, restaurant and a great cooking place that give classes on all sorts of gormet cooking, it seems like a class act kind of place built in an old bank building. There is a row of antique places just before you get into the town. There really is not much there. The closest place to shop would be Honesdale, if you follow that same road. Hawley just doesn't give me the quaint feel like Honesdale or Greentown.
Small chalets in The Hideout have been going for the $125,000. range. Have you considered a small brand new modular? If you spend $125,000. I would think you could get your own brand new smaller modular. They now have these little chalet type of modulars too. How about Wallenpaupack Lake Estates?

The region is beautiful, but my last visit to Hawley, Fall of 2006, was rather disappointing. Nearly nothing to do after about 5pm.

However, as a second home you might like it as it is quaint, and with access to other small towns you would have all your services.

Hawley is about 20-25 minutes from Greentown on Rt. 507, and roughly the same distance from Hamlin on Rt. 590. There is a CVS, Arby's, two grocery stores, gas station, car wash, a large park with tennis courts and many other small shops and restaurants in town. Up on Route 6 near the high school are several other restaurants, shops, and motels. Once you get outside of the town it is mostly rural. Honesdale is about another 20 minutes past Hawley on Route 6. There is a larger shopping area there with Walmart, K-Mart, movie theater, etc. and larger "town" area with the county courthouse, hospital (Wayne Memorial), and lots of shops and offices. Hawley is a nice, small town. You would probably like it if you are looking for a quiet, rural place.

Greewntown, the area you are speaking of where Arby's is, I thought that was Lake Wallenpaupack...correct me if I'm wrong. I thought Hawley was the littel stetch where The Settlers Inn is.

That area is Hawley. Lake Wallenpaupack is the name of the lake, but it is not an actual town or address. I know that as far up as the high school is considered Hawley, but I'm not sure how far it goes until it is considered Tafton.

Great information, thank you.

Far as nothing to do there after 5PM. That's an attraction not a negative. Manhattan is 2-21/2 hours away.

I'm not sure about the nothing to do part either. If you have kids that like to be involved in sports and other activities, you'll find that there is rarely a night that you don't have somewhere to go. And if you want to go to a movie or shopping, it's only a short drive away.

You can also get quiet further east near Dingman's Ferry, Shohola and Milford PA.

A friend of mine suggested just spending a couple thousand a month to rent a nice place with a garage for the month of Oct, or even Nov, then again in Jan or Feb ( for the snow effect ) rather than tie up that much capital for a place we may only use for a couple+ months a year.

If we decide we really are going to spend more time there we can always buy one.

Seems like a prudent idea yes?

Then we could also maybe check out several areas from a standpoint of spending more time there rather than just parachuting in and out.
