erie would work, or, if you wanted something more rural, there is tionesta lake in forest county. land is cheap, taxes are cheap. There are many people who have summer homes/camps in forest county. The main towns in forest county are tionesta and marienville. Tionesta is right by the lake, while marienville is about 20-25 minutes away. marienville is very popular for atv riding and snow mobiling. That area is pretty easy to get to from pittsburgh by taking route 28 north out of pittsburgh and then hitting up with route 66.

Many folks from Pittsburgh seek vacation property at Seven Springs or Hidden Valley resorts in Somerset County off Route 30. If you vacation there, Ohiopyle isn't far away and they offer white water rafting.

Thanks for the information, this gives me places to begin my search. While speculative at this point, retirement is not far away.
