Sounds like you've done your homework. The Amish are a good resource in this area. I think you'll be happy and I think it's a great place to raise a family, that is if your girls love the outdoors and don't mind the isolation (I'm picturing Little House on the Prairie, ha). Crime is practically non existent in that area. You will be close to Findley Lake, Lake Erie, and Chaut. Lake... not too shabby, and a little further is the Allegheny Reservoir, a large lake more in the wild with mostly wooded undeveloped shorelines. Erie does have some great Catholic prep schools and NY public schools are generally also very good. If you're coming from a congested area, I don't think you'll mind the drive to Erie (outside of blizzard conditions). On I86, there is very little traffic, pretty relaxing drive (unless blizzard). Once you get on I90, there's a lot more traffic but traffic jams are rare. You can drive to Erie with very few lights or stops if you take I79.

I'd like to see some kind of documented proof of that. That's quite an exageration in my opinion.

Come on...go to the buffalo NWS site and check it out. For more specific snowfall events check out some of the news links.

GoErie.com: Snowfall totals vary widely in region

Notice findley lake has had 229 inches at this time of this article so far this season and there is still plenty of winter left. It is no exageration my firend..they get a boat load of snow every year.

^ Exactly. Chautauqua county is prime snowbelt territory and totals vary quite a bit due to changes in elevation. There are lake effect snow warnings pratically every day it seems, in Chautauqua, Warren, Cattaraugus, and McKean counties. It is entirely reasonable that some areas may have up to 300" this winter. He wants "documented proof" though, huh? What an .......!

I'm what?

I lived in that area 36 years, I know they get a lot of snow, but 300 inches is stretching it a bit to far.

This is an article from today's Times
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Season's snowfall total tops 140 inches

Published: February 23. 2009 5:51AM
http://imagec10.247realmedia.com/RealMedia/ads/Creatives/GoErie/GOERIEMAJOR09/300_radar_maps.jpg (broken link)

The 2 to 5 inches of snow expected today could make this the third-snowiest season ever recorded in Erie.

According to National Weather Service data, 140.9 inches of snow have fallen at the Erie International Airport this winter.

Only 1.9 more would be needed to tie this season with that of 1977-78, which currently holds the third-snowiest spot.

The area is expected to receive at least that much snow today, according to a lake effect snow advisory issued by the National Weather Service.

The advisory is in effect until 6 p.m. today in Erie and Crawford counties.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now before you say it.................I know SW NY is the snowbelt and have got more than that, but to say 150 inches more is crazy.

You are correct, the annual average snowfall at the airport is NOTHING similar to the average annual snowfall in the snowbelr areas along the Chautauqua Ridge from Findley Lake to Mayville. You don't have to believe the research i have done, you don't have to believe the many news articles that have quoted some of the 200+ average annual snowfall amounts for various areas, and you don't even have to believe forecaster Stephen McLaughlin of the Buffalo National Weather Service who I spoke to personally to get specific snowfall amounts for specific locations...you really don't have to believe any of it. I just don't know why some people just can't say, "Hey, I never knew that" when they are presented with information that shows them something that they didn't know. If you don't want to believe it, that's fine, but I did enough research on the various areas of the Chautauqua Ridge to know what area get how much with regards to annual averages. Either way, have a good day.
And..if you haven't believed anything yet, maybe you will read this bulletin from the NWS Buffalo on Feb 7th and finally admit publically here that you were "wrong." Please note the Chautauqua County region and specifically those areas on the "ridge" which I have pointed out. Please also note that these were amounts as of Feb 7th and they have received considerable snowfall since then.

So the highest reporting station has 63 inches to go to reach 300...that's not going to happen in any way with a little over one realistic month left in winter.

Why don't we just agree to wait until the end of the season and ckeck the facts out before dclaring what is and what is not going to happen. I will agree you are correct if Mayville doesn't reach 300 inches and you can agree i was right if they do. Either way it is a **** load of snow!!

Holy crap Scott, are you for real? None of my posts were meant for you, so I wasn't going to respond to your laughable request for proof. I stand by the 300" snow total I mentioned, especially since I live directly in and drive though the heaviest snow belt areas regularly. The 300" total is for particular areas in the western NY/PA border area and actually this was from a few weeks back when one of big storms hit while I was out of town, I was told this from 2 people who got the info from the news. You do understand that the 300" is the total accumulated snow right? I wouldn't be surprised if you might think it means there is 300" of standing snow.

You really lived in the area for 36 years?? Schinz seems to know and understand the area much better than you do. As schinz pointed out, lake effect snow tallies vary drastically in very small areas and with elevation changes, and this has been a record winter, and a perfect winter I think. On top of this, you think there is only one realistic month left in winter and 63" is not possible???? You really lived here for 36 years?? Is there a new snow switch that turns off on March 21?

You already have a history of false posts, you might want to quit while you're behind.
