In a few words Reading has become a DUMP in the last few years. [/font]
The city is bad. The area around it isn't.

That's like saying all of the DC metro is crime ridden and murders galore. It's just wrong. Parts of the city are, but the surrounding area is generally pretty good.

Reading, when you cross the river and go another 5 minutes has minimal crime. I was never afraid in shillington, despite moving from gettysburg, where a store robbery is big news.

The FBI crime reports list Exeter Twp. as being a 2 on a scale of 1 to 10 for violent and property crime. 3 is average. Reading is an 8 for both. Oley is a 1/2, likewise Robeson and almost all the surrounding townships and burroughs score a 3 or less. Crime drops dramatically at the city limits. The surrounding county is one of the leading real estate markets in Pa. and has avoided dropping prices. Families are still moving here from Montgomery county, Bucks, Philly, New Jersey and NYC .
Reading has gone downhill from influxes of criminals from places like NYC but is making progress in making it better. Local values have to rub off on the newcomers eventually and they'll learn to live better lives and be better citizens.

I have personally lived in Exeter Twp. for the last 3 years. It is very safe! Reading city proper------Not so much! I do not go into Reading. I shop in Wyomissing, Sinking Springs or drive 40 minutes to King of Prussia. The burbs surrounding the city itself are absolutely fine.

I was looking into moving to a neighborhood in Blandon, Pa. Does anyone have first hand knowledge of this area? Are there family resourses near by? YMCA? Good schools? Is Reading too close for comfort? Any Shopping Malls near by?
Any and all information would be helpful. Thanks!

First thing I would say is to see if you can deal with the occasional "aroma" that comes from the local mushroom businesses in the area.

Schools? Not sure if you'd be Schuylkill Valley or Fleetwood, haven't heard terrible things about either.

I don't think the proximity to Reading is much to worry about. I've lived in Fleetwood for the past 5 years and the worst that happened to us is having our rural mailbox trashed and items left by lazy Fedex/UPS, etc., carriers at the mailbox stolen, but I can't blame that on Reading.

There's plenty of shopping in nearby Wyomissing.

I have no idea about local YMCA.

Hope this helps!

There is Reading and there is the Reading area. Very very different. Outside Reading proper housing is pretty good but jobs are tougher depending on what you do. I left the area because high end IT jobs are tough to get unless you want to work at a few companies down in the King of Prussia / Great Valley area. That can be a very brutal commute though.

Today, Reading is a DUMP! I grew up there in the 70s-80s. Loved it then. Everybody took care of their houses (row-homes) inside the city. Now the house I grew up in has graffiti on the front porch, and trash is everywhere. My mom moved away after a drive-by shooting 10 years ago. So sad to see that the city being destroyed by lazy bastards, crime, drugs, thugs, etc. Some people living there have no respect for anything. We didn't have anything ($$$$) either, but we did have pride and respect. And if something needed fixed or painted we did it. Today, nobody gives a crap. Glad I don't live there anymore. So, so sad to see what Reading has become.
