I am looking to relocate from Long Island, NY. I have a 11 yr old daughter so schools are important. I am interested in a good, vibrant college town. Main focus is an area where commuting to Philly (or NYC) is an option, shopping nearby, not too much traffic.

I understand the E. Strousburg, Bloomsburg, Lewisburg areas have some potential.

Any information you can provide is appreciated.

Thanks!

I would strongly recommend Carlisle, PA. Excellent urban town with great schools, low housing costs and solid job growth and economy.

How about West Chester PA, Villanova, PA, or similar on the Philadelphia suburban periphery? Maybe Doylestown as a very likely prospect. I mention these in connection wtih your "possible commute to Philadelphia". Princeton NJ is nice this time of year.... East Stroudsburg or "East 'Burg" is nice, but under pressure from NYC metro growth.
Bloomsburg is very nice-small town-wholesome in a generally agricultural area....about 12,500 people..a bit remote from Philly or NYC but you can get to Wilkes-Barre & Scranton in under an hour via I-80/I-81. Lewisburg is idyllic but further remote than Bloomsburg....Bucknell is an excellent school....close to Ivy league, many say....

The Lehigh Valley has 6 four year colleges and two community colleges within 45 minutes of each other - Lehigh, Lafayette, DeSales, Muhlenberg, Cedar Crest and Moravian. The commute is pretty bad to either NYC or Phil. but it's a great area for college activites and two school districts - Saucon and Southern Lehigh are very good.

RE: Doylestown....there's a ton of info in the Doylestown thread--currently on this very page of threads....Delaware ValleyCollege is located there...also the Mercer Museum... it's James A Michener's birthplace..a really terrific community small enough in atmosphere, dynamic enough for those whose needs go beyond the ordinary....and near enough Phila. to round things out.

I think you would really enjoy West Chester. Its only 25 miles west of Philly, 10 miles from the great shopping in King of Prussia,Exton, and the Mainline.Good schools.

Kutztown. Not far from Allentown which is not far from the edge of the NYC commuting area and its close to Philly. Good schools, shopping, plus very rural and good housing.

Commuting to NY or Philly isn't going to work from Bloomsburg or Lewisburg.
Stroudsburg to NY is possible.
Also think about Allentown, Reading, and other Lehigh valley towns.
