This past weekend (6\7\09 - 6\8\09) I had my windows open and at about 3AM I heard a very loud noise coming from North West (across Rt 113) of my house. For a more exact location see the attached map. The red arrows represent the direction the sound waves were traveling in.

As I said the noise was very loud so I can't imagine that it didn't wake other people up. It seemed to be coming from somewhere behind a farm less then a mile away but it was impossible to tell because sound echos so much in my development. Visually speaking there is nothing but flat farmland and then a rise which I can't see past so I will have to get in my car and drive over at 3AM if no one knows what it is.

As for what the sound sounds like; I would say it is most comparable to the sound that steam locomotives make when they release their steam after coming to a stop, only it was long and drawn out. In fact it went on for at least an hour but I can't say for exactly how long since I went back to sleep. I also noticed that the source of the sound seemed to be moving, or something was moving in front of it as there was some Doppler Effect at regular intervals of time (or so I think). Unfortunately I didn't think to measure the intervals as I was still half asleep. The strange part is, I have heard this noise before at the same strange hours from the same general direction.

Anyone have any ideas what this could be?

Not a bad idea. Maybe they are up late making license plates?

I live on the opposite side of 113 from the prison (near Creamery) and I've heard this noise, as recently as last week. I've heard it later at night. It's loud and goes on for at least an hour. Last year I heard it and went for a drive to see if I could locate the source. I noticed that it got louder as I drove up Cressman Road and got closer to the prison. None of my neighbors seem to know what it is. I called the township this week and they were not aware of it. Does anyone know? Has anyone contacted the prison?

I heard it again this past Saturday night. It definitely seems to be related to some kind of manufacturing process but I just can't understand why they would do it so late at night. I will give the prison a call this weekend to see what they say.
