Hi, all

I grew up in Philadelphia/South New Jersey. Moved to Michigan in 1996.
I am AA, my husband is caucasion. We have 2 beautiful biracial children.
Would love to move close to my extended family but it's a tough call.

We currently reside in a suburb of Michigan. It is very safe, family friendly, diverse and our children attend one of the best school's in our area.

I am looking for a safe neighborhood, excellent schools, diversity, etc. near Philadelphia. Affordable housing would also be a plus!

I would appreciate any advice.

Thanks,
~Lyris

Mount Airy and West Mount Airy. You should post on the Philadelphia boards as well but you will get a lot of the same answer...

If you don't mind an hour drive to Philly, Lancaster County.

I also grew up in Philly (Germantown, Olney, Fox Chase). I live in a small town in WI now with my husband & young daughter - we are contemplating moving back to Philly. West Mt Airy has been suggested to us, as has part of South Philly - east of Broad Street, north of washington, west of Queens Village (good school, artistic neighbors, diverse). If you want just outside of the city my cousins grew up in Cheltenham which is pretty diverse. Cheltenham is kind of where north Broad Street ends: from West Oak Lane, cross Cheltenham Ave, you're in Cheltenham. Very safe, very family friendly. Not sure how affordable. The school district is amazing. Driving into town is a drag - most direct is Broad Street, but the traffic lights and pedestrian traffic can make it drag on.
