Hi everyone,

I was just offered a position in Allentown but am wary of living in a "smallish" town. First of all, please feel free to dispel those preconceptions! Secondly, I was wondering how much of a pain it would be to commute from Philly to Allentown each day; I am guessing I would be a reverse commuter so I would miss some of that awful traffic I keep hearing about?

Best,
L.B.

I say make the move unless you live north of Philly and are going to be working on the south side of Allentown. Traffic will still be bad going the reverse way especially if you have to go up the northeast ext. of TP.

There are a lot of good things about Allentown plus the cost of living will be a lot less--that's why the traffic is so bad with all those people living toward A-town and commuting down to Philly.

Allentown has a population of 106,632 - a smaller city then Philadelphia but not really a town. gut12 is right, lots of people that live up here commute to Philadelphia or NYC. The reverse commute that you are talking about might not be as bad but it's going to get old fast. Maybe you'd like to rent for a little while and decide if Allentown would work. The winters can be especially brutal for commuting.
