namely Selinsgrove area....we are hoping to move to.

It is Hubby's home town and hwere ALL his family is. Some how he ended up in FL with me and it has been ard for us to make the move. I have only been there once and liked it..it will also be nice to have family near for the kids.

I have a few concerns...

I am currently a Licensed Massage Therapists here in Fl. I know Massage Therapists are not licensed in PA but I would maintain my FL license. How is the job market for this field in that area...I am also looking into Harrisburg for work. I will also be completing an Esthetician program before I move as well. So I will have duel Licenses the Esthetician should transfer to PA with no problems.

I am worried about un-professional massage centers? Can anyone in that area give me any suggestions, contacts, or guidence?

Do you think it would be better for me to just start my own mini spa? or am i better trying to find a spa/salon/massage center to work for?

When we move I will be the bread winner...a change from what we have now. I feel that I can make enough so he can really decide on what he wants to do. He will be leaving a high stress, but excellent job. He just is not happy here and I cannot see him doing it for 40 more years!

Please any help would be great!

xxoo

I can't imagine you making nearly enough money as the (nearly) sole provider for a family as a massage therapist in the Selinsgrove area...I'm not trying to bring you down, just being honest.

on average...here in FL..I make anywhere between 20-35 an hour when I work for an establishment.

I would think 50% should be the going rate. so the avergae massage is 45 (and that is super cheap) I would expect 22.50.

Perhaps it does not work that way up there! Guess I better find out! Do you know the beauty industry...or are you just assuming?

any thoughts on this?

I called a few schools and kinda got the " Wow, you passed your state board". "You will be able to find a great paying job, because you are licensed"....maybe they were just being nice.....

Do you think I would better off opening my own spa?

Well, it is a lower-income, low population area. I'm just guessing, but I can think of 5 women off of the top of my head that went to massage therapy school and not one of them had a successful practice in a rural area. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think the demand for that sort of business will be as large in rural PA.

so maybe harrisburg would be better for work then?

I don't mind driving up to an hour for a good job.

Thank you for your insight.

Olive, you might be better off working in Harrisburg, or Williamsport to the north. The Selinsgrove/Snyder County area isn't really into massage and those types of things for "cosmetic" purposes. However, there are some physical therapy places that might be looking for someone like you. My husband had a back injury and went to one such place and they had a licensed massage therapist on their staff. That might be something worth looking into.

We're an hour from Harrisburg/Camp Hill, about 50 minutes from Williamsport, and about 75 minutes from State College (home of Penn State University), which might be another option, although it's over a mountain so winter driving might be an issue.

Keep us posted on your thoughts and let us know if you need anything else.
