Happy Holidays. My Family and I are PCSing from Mountain Hell Idaho and very happy to be back on the east (orgin. NYC/PA) We are mil to mil and looking for area to garden, chickens, etc and work. Willing to commute but we are just starting our family (only a 2yr old now) and hoping to stay put for a bit. We hunt and are very outdoorsy. Any help would be awesome I am just looking for areas for house hunting now. Btw our price range is upto 250K, so no mansion. Thanks in advance!!

How far are you willing to commute? Eglin Reservation essentially takes up almost all the land in the south part of Okaloosa County where the majority of people want to live, and south Santa Rosa County (ie. west of Hurlburt) has seen explosive suburban growth and can also be a bit hard to find more than an acre of so for a reasonable price because whe you get much bigger people price the land with an eye toward 'but you can put a subdivision on it'. Going on the assumption that you're talking actual hobby farm for this rec: If you're willing to drive 45-60 minutes or so to Eglin, I'd look into an area called Mossy Head, which is east of Crestview and seems to have so far avoided the suburban sprawl that's eating Crestview alive. It's also got a new elementary school out there, and you can find acreage parcels for reasonable prices by local standards.

If you're talking Hurlburt, then look in the Milton area, and figure almost an hour commute from there to Hurlburt.

Sadly we are looking both bases, our joint spouse is me for hurlburt and my husband for Eglin. Almost any military community seems to be subdivisioned out, in idaho too. We just want some area where our neighbor isnt a sneeze away. Out here its like base housing offbase, but I want some r&r when not at work. Thanks for the help. Do you know the best area even if its suburb? We plan on buying so we are starting the search now.

First, think homes built before about 1988-89 if you're looking south of Eglin reservation. It was about that time when lot sizes really started shrinking to postage stamp size. Check with Okaloosa County or any individual towns about the chickens. I know there's been some discussion of chicken bans in a few of the cities recently.

I'd probably look in the Kenwood part on the north side of Ft. Walton Beach-Shalimar-Poquito Bayou/Longwood, maybe a few subdivisions north of Lewis Turner Ave. It'll put you in between the two bases, Shalimar, Longwood, and Kenwood are all seen as better than average elementary schools by local standards, have some nice areas by local standards, and your money will go further than it would in the east side of Niceville/Bluewater. (and I want to say the city of Niceville is anti-chicken. I know the covenants in Bluewater ban what they consider to be farm animals.)

I'd recommend Valparaiso as an option, but I'm not sure how the noise issue will sort out if the F-35 bed down proper ever happens since they're right under the final approach for the north-south runway.

Panama City's a lot easier- once you get north of the bay, there's a lot of open land for sale, often at very reasonable price.

East Milton off of Hwy 87 just south of I10 is an area called American Farms... it has hundreds of houses, mobile homes on 5 acre "hobby farm" lots. Its 35 minutes from Hurlburt Field. Check it out. I lived there and commuted to work in Navarre and it only took me 15 minutes to get to work.

Right now Im offering a gig thats perfect for a military person looking to make some extra cash... check it out...
