Greets All

I couldn't find a board for Okaloosa County. I've been toying with the idea of relocating to FL so that we can be close to family that lives there in Ft Walton Beach. I'd like to get a realtor license and be a snowbird for a while until we actually move for good. I'm also sick of cold weather here in PA.

Anyone here familiar with Baker? I'm very interested in finding out tax tables, quality of medical care and job growth near or around Baker. I found a few homes online that are very reasonable compared to the costs in PA and homes closer to Ft Walton Beach. )

I look forward to your input and appreciate any insight to the pros and cons of Baker.

Baker is a little country town. There's not much to it really. If you want to be in the country, then it could be perfect, although I'm sure you will experience some real culture shock coming from PA. Crestview is where the newer development is, mainly due to Eglin AFB. Crestview is a military town with a lot of transplants.

There is no "job growth" or "medical care" in Baker. You will have to drive to Crestview for just about everything. It's a quick drive though. I don't know about medical care in Crestview, I'm only familiar with Pensacola which has a great hospital (Sacred Heart) as well as Baptist and West Florida. I don't know much about West Florida Hospital, but Baptist is not the greatest.

Thank you, Mike. I noticed that Crestview would be the area to go for essentials. The last time we were in Ft Walton (8+ Years Ago) the area was growing by leaps and bounds and traffic was nuts. Haha
We do want to get away from the main highway where we are now. Even though we're on an acre of ground it's become quite "noisy" and the taxes have become over the top. Are you still in Alabama?

PDITO, where are you moving from in PA? What tax tables are you referring to? I am originally from PA, live in Pensacola, and my aunt and uncle live in Shalimar, so I might be able to offer you some shared insight.

Yes, I've been in Alabama for almost 4 years now after living in Florida (Ormond Beach and Tallahassee) my whole life.

The people I know that live in Baker don't mind driving into Crestview for pretty much everything. They ended up where they did because they wanted to be able to afford enough land to have a few acres so they could maybe get a horse or some other farm animals.

Hi NC..I'm in the Southeast corner of PA, a few minutes from the DE state line. I was looking for info on Property Tax, School Tax and local tax. How long have you lived in FL?

Hi beachmouse..I like the idea of having land around for privacy and in case we set up amateur radio antennas..if the area allows it. We definitely want to avoid any area that is HOA. )

Mike..did your job relocate you? We're trying to look at areas in reasonable distance to a 'major' airport since my spouse's job requires him to travel often.

PDit...Property tax/school tax runs about $100 for every $10k roughly in Escambia Co. after homestead credit. So, a 150k home will be about $1500 a year. You will pay more for home owners insurance, but not having state income tax cancels that out. It will cost you $425 to register each car here! Plus you will pay tax on things like food and clothing here. Really, there's not much difference.

We have been here almost two years. My wife likes it. I only like November through March. It is just way to hot in the summer for me with no break in the heat, even at night.

Check out the Pace/Chumuckla area in Santa Rosa County, it's small enough so that you can have some land (although growing), but close enough to Pensacola to be near shopping, airport, and hospitals.

Baker is a quaint little town in Okaloosa county just outside of Crestview. The latest stat's I found, show that the population in 07 was approx 7,134 with a median income in 2009 of $40,971. Taxes are at 10.9858 mills. Although Baker is consider a small unincorporate town, it covers about 253.6 square miles. Medical facilities are within a short drive to Crestview. Great place to spend some time in the outdoors relaxing.
