You do not need to evacuate if you live in Pensacola unless you're on the water or living in a mobile home or other structure that won't stand up to the winds. The biggest damage from hurricanes comes in the form of storm surge. If you're living near the water, then you definitely have to evacuate. If not and you live in a reasonably well-built home, you are better off staying put unless you enjoy being stuck in major traffic. Most people who go to shelters are those in need of assistance or who know the homes they are living in are not built to code.
Just be prepared ahead of time and you'll be fine. Don't go shopping for plywood the day before the storm like a majority of people seem to do.
Hurricanes are a fact of life in the area and always will be. Sometimes you go years without one and other times you get hit more often. Some are minor while others are major. But I can tell you from experience that the major devastation occurs on the beaches. Just keep that in mind when choosing a place to live.

hi i was really interested in the pensacola area i am planning on moving there soon to attend pensacola junior college. i am young and just got engaged and have no idea where to look for a home! we are into the small town country scene where would you suggest the best town is that is also close to PJC? one more thing my fiance is in the tree trimming business is it going to be hard for him to find work?

The Panhandle sucks. I know I live here. I actually just relocated from the midwest, because I HAD to, certainly not because I wanted to. I hate it here. We live in a beautiful beach front home in Navarre, and I cannot stress to you how much I hate it. If you like old, racist, former military bikers, this is the place for you. Otherwise, stay far, far, far away from here, or anywhere in the panhandle, really. It sucks. You might as well be living in Alabama. I hate the towns, traffic sucks, I hate the people, ignorant, inbred racists, I even hate the way the towns are set up-ghetto trailer park towns. It sucks, sucks, sucks here. I wish I could emphasize how much the panhandle of Florida, in fact all of the South in general, sucks.

Sorry to hear you feel that way. My raised in the Midwest self likes it here, but I can understand how it's not a good fit for everyone. And there are far worse places in the South to be. I used to live in one of them.
