Simple enough question. I'm wondering what the most you've spent on dinner per person. Even if you didn't pay for it, what did the total come out to?
Mine was $120 for 2 people in Chicago a couple of years ago. The girl I took there was a boozehound. She ordered 4-5 margaritas that evening...before we went to a bar and ordered some more
once in a while we will go out and try the best the culinary world has to offer. we may have 1 drink when we go out to a high end place. we spent 350.00 a couple at the 4 seasons retaurant in nyc.. typically a decent restaurant here in nyc or long island clocks in at 250.00 a couple. any high end steakhouse is around that too like peter lugars or jacks steak house..
we recently went to one if by land in the village and that was 200.00 a couple.
got a gift card for mortons steak house ... i think it was 100 bucks so i said to my wife lets go.... dinner was over 250.00 bucks much to our surprise . we went to the maidstone arms inn in east hampton for thanksgiving that was 250.00 a couple.. the 21 club in manhattan was around 225.00 when we went
the creations by these master chefs are so far above what you typically get that its well worth it. visually and taste wise these creations are works of art.
i always say i recommend going to a place like the 4-seasons once in your life just so you not only expierience it but have a reference point for just what you get from some of the worlds greatest chefs.
A group of 10 or so of us took my boss and her husband out to dinner at a ChopHouse - after she announced she was leaving her position. She'd shepharded us through some really difficult times, and we decided we wanted to do something nice. We all chipped in for her and her husband's meal (and drinks) and then everybody paid for their own.
I think the total was around $1500. I think we went through 5 bottles of wine? Maybe more. I guess that's a lesson for me if I ever do this kind of thing -- tell the restaurant to limit the wine! Everytime a bottle ran out - they simply opened another one!
But - it was a fabulous dinner, and we were in their "private" room -- so it was honestly one of the nicest work events I've ever been at. (As compared to cramming into a booth at Applebee's)...
On a personal basis - my husband and I went to a fabulous steak house for our anniversary one year -- I think the bill was around $200.00 At most that would have been one drink each - we're not big drinkers. Still - the most wonderful steak, and the service - out of the world. We still talk about it.
But these are both one time events and don't remotely reflect normal dining situations for us.
I don't think I've ever spent more than $100 / person on a private/personal meal. Neither me nor my spouse drink, and we've never had anyone go crazy on anything we hosted.
Once I went to the House of Lords. I got the filet mignon with lobster tail. The total was $67 and I gave a $13 tip for a total of $80. This was by far the most expensive dinner I have ever had, but it was worth every penny.
Thankfully I didn't pay for this, but one year our department had a Christmas dinner at a steak place in NYC. I think it was Smith and Wolenskis (sp?). There were about 10 of us and the bill came to about $4,000 before tip. Lots of wine and Kobe beef.
I think somewhere between $150 and $200 for two people. Usually, though, we combine that in with gift cards, groupon, sauce mag GC, etc. and pay less than that.

You should try the Michelin 3 stars in NY. There's 5 of them. For the tasting menus:
Per Se - $275+ tax, service included
Daniel - $200+
Jean-Georges - $38/course * 5, $190+ (awesome 1/2 price lunch special)
Le Bernadin - $185+
All per person, not including drinks. I can't bring myself to go to Masa at $400+
EDIT. You're completely correct that the whole experience is different than you can get anywhere else. Everything from the service, comfort level, decor, visual, textural, taste, etc is different.
