If the hotel is charging part of your stay as a deposit when you book over the phone, just ask them to mail you a receipt if you want one. Small hotels like B&B's often do charge 1 night's rate or half your total rate as a deposit.
As for checking out, most large hotel chains or hotels in business districts just slip the receipt under your door around 5-6am. You don't need to check out at the front desk if everything on your receipt is correct. Just leave the key card in the room & go. I travel a good bit and see this about 90% of the time.
I guess I'm surprised to hear that everyone else gets it under the door. Maybe it's because I never book directly with the hotel and my bill is always prepaid?

Maybe. Or maybe it depends on the hotel. I still get one under the door even if the stay was paid for with Hilton or Marriott points.

Even when I book through a Priceline.com or some other pre-paid site, I almost always still get a slip under the door that just shows no balance is due.

Yea, I get that same slip, but I never get it under the door. I usually have the bellman bring it to me when I call for him, or grab it from the front desk while waiting for vallet. I've never had it waiting for me under the door... which would be convenient.
I book through a corporate website. Almost never through priceline and such.
