I'm a therapist. I visit clients in various locations. My milieage has always been reimbursed by my employer. But last year, I also did contract work (1099) for another company and mileage was not reimbursed. This is the first year that I will claim mileage and my car expenses as a work related expense on my taxes. Here's my question- I have kept a mileage log but it has client's names and addresses on it.

How, exactly, do I maintain confidentiality for my clients if I'm supposed to submit this for my taxes? I know I can block out the names, but what about the addresses? What's the bare minimum amount of info that I need to submit. I'm a little confused on this. Thanks.

You don't need to submit the log for your yearly taxes. That would only come up if you are audited.

Note that you can claim either mileage or expenses, not both. If you're claiming the standard deduction you cannot deduct oil changes, tires, etc.

Just keep your log book, and gas reciepts filed away. I believe it is for 7 years. Also, the irs web page may be helpful for details.
