As gas prices go higher, any people are looking for the best way to cut the bill.

I found this article of the best and worst gas cards.

http://bottomline.msnbc.msn.com/_new...-few-good-ones

I would recommend the Pentagon Federal Platinum Rewards Card. I've had it for 5 years. No problems, great rates, no annual fee. Points convert into prepaid cash cards, travel or other reward items. It's 5 points (percent) for gas, 3 points for groceries and 1 for everything else. You also get 25,000 intro points.

Recently, I redeemed the extra 25,000 points they added to my account. They are fast with redeeming points. Once I redeemed my points on their website, they sent me my prepaid Visa card of $250 in 3 days. They also have good balance transfer rates on the card every 2-3 months if you need that feature. I highly recommend this card.

I also try to go to Costo or Aafes gas stations to save the 7-10 cent in gas. Most of the time the Costo around here is overcrowd so I don't have the patience to wait.

USAA has a American Express card that offers 2.25% cash or reward points on gas and groceries. I don't have that card but heard it was excellent.

I have a gas card with Exxon Mobil but I haven't used it in so long, I forgot the benefits that come with the card. But I saw a sign at the Exxon gas stations that if you use your Speedpass through May 15th (I think), you save 15 cent per gallon.

I've had reward cards with the big banks including Chase, BOA and Citi. I don't use them because I have learned to stay away from big bank credit card. They lower credit line, increase APR, charge fees for not using the card, other fees. I've had enough. I haven't used my Citibank for regular purchases for 4 years. I use them once a year to make a small purchases so they don't close.

Can anyone else recommend a good gas card or rewards program?

I have a card that pays me cash back for certain transactions, but I am miffed that my statement doesn't specify exactly which purchases qualified for the cash back.

For example, if I get a certain amount back for gasoline purchases, I don't know if gas bought from the supermarket pumps earns the reward. How do they know that was for gas, when I also bought groceries? Or, if I buy gas at a regular gas station and pay inside with my card and also buy beef jerky, am I getting the cash back on the jerky too?

I have Discover "Open Road" Card - get 5% cash back on "Automotive" which includes gas, repairs, tires, etc. and on my statement it does divide the cashback transactions into categories.

I do know (on buying the beef jerky in the gas station) you would get 5% on the purchase due to it was at the station and it does count gas purchases at grocery stores, Costco, etc.

It all depends on what MCC code is used at the terminal. Penfed knows the difference between "pay at pump" and in-store and only pays 5%/pts on the at pump purchases. Chase doesn't care and pays the bonus % on either, even though they have different MCC codes

I love my American Express Blue Cash - 5% on gas, grocery, and pharmacies. 1.25% on everything else.

Yes, on purchases above $6500.

Plus that version of Blue Cash isn't available anymore.

New Blue Preferred is 6% on groceries 3% on gas and department store ($75 annual fee)
New Blue Everyday is 3% groceries 2% on gas and department stores (no AF)
Neither have a spending tier.

With the Pentagon Rewards Card, there is no minimum purchase above a certain amount, no annual fees, 5% on gas and groceries all the time. Best card I have in my deck!

Singlelady10,

That sounds like a great card. Do you do any other business with PenFed?

It's a great card, I have it also. But to correct you, it's 5pts on gas, 3pts on groceries and 1pt on everything else.

Don't forget the $250 (Visa or other gift card) for signup!

I had a auto loan with them about 3 years ago until it was paid off. It's a good credit union. No problems at all. After dealing with Chase, Citi and BOA for years, it was a relief to be with a bank that doesn't nickel and dime.
