Just found out it will go up $300 a month, from $500 to $800, for family coverage. Thanks, Obama!

What was your old plan, where did you get it? What were your out of pocket costs? That's a big jump and not really believable...

Why would I lie about it? It's through my husband's employer. My husband called me this morning from work, from his boss's office, to tell me the rates were going up. It's the same plan. It's Blue Cross/Blue Shield. Same coverage we had already had, but now it's going to cost $300/month more.

The reason he called me from his boss' office was to ask if we should keep the insurance or not. We have one kid who is turning 26, but another who is 24. He wondered if we should drop from family coverage because of the expense. I don't want to do that and leave the 24 year old without coverage.

Not really believable? Really? I am offended by that statement. Again, why would I go on this board and lie about that? There are others affected this way too; I'm not the only one. I was just asking others if they have been informed that THEIR rates are going up.

No one is calling you a liar... but being misinformed is highly likely.

Something is different to make the premium different.
Figure out what it is.

Our rates go up every year... no reason to think that this year will be any different.

OP, sounds like you husband's business might be passing along some of their costs to you. It happens.

They pass along some of the costs to us every year and it goes up every year. He has been with this employer for 20 years, so I know how the insurance premiums go. They don't go up $300/month though. This is due to Obamacare.

Just found this:

Why your health insurance premium could increase under the Affordable Care Act | KATU Investigators | KATU.com - Portland News, Sports, Traffic Weather and Breaking News - Portland, Oregon

and this

http://blogs.kqed.org/stateofhealth/...iums-going-up/

This is one of the comments under the second link:

"Our income is also slightly above the threshold for subsidies. Our current Anthem Blue Cross rate for a high-deductible HSA is $632 for a family of 3. Blue Cross sent a letter saying if we did nothing the new rate would be $1497. The exchange gave us a lowest premium of $1313/month, a whopping increase of $681/month. We will also lose about $300/month in tax deductions from not having the use of an HSA (although no one seems able to answer questions about where HSA's fit in the ACA). Why isn't there a cap on how much insurance companies can increase premiums for people? We are flabbergasted and unable to afford the new premiums of $1313/month on top of losing a $300/month in tax savings."

did you comparison shop yet, or are you just taking your current provider's word for it that you can't get better deals?

wait...you want to keep your 24 yr old on your insurance? Thanks Obama!

Why did your husband's employer's insurance rates increase? Mine stayed the same this year, first year out of the past 9 they didn't go up.

Good for you. You are one of the lucky ones. A lot of others aren't so lucky.
