There was a check. It was 485.35 dollars. On the check number wise it was written correctly as 485.35.
On the part where you write out the number 85 was accidently written for cents instead of 35 cents. The 8 was completely crossed out and a 3 was written below it. The check writer did not initial it. Everything else on the check was correct.

Will the check be returned for the scribbling out of the number and if so will the check writer be charged a fee or will the bank accept it since it's a minor mistake on the cents?

It probably depends on the bank. In most cases, I think it would go through okay.

I don't think most banks make a huge deal out of $0.50. If it was 485.35 vs 435.35, that might be a bigger problem, but I think you should be fine.

I work in a Finance dept, and it is the written amounts that the banks validate. If the numerical entry doesn't match the written entry, they go by the written one.

Im sure it will go through just fine. I have made worse mistakes with no problems.

They are supposed to go by the written-out amount, but I've seen checks where they did not (accepted the numbers over the written-out amount when they differed). Realistically for something this small they're not going to reject the check.

Checks are negotiable for the legal written amount. So if it's written out correctly, e.g., "four hundred eighty five dollars 35/100 cents", you have nothing to worry about. Even if that amount was incorrect, the bank in most cases would simply adjust the deposit/cashed item against the account for the difference (most banks do not charge a fee when this occurs).

The courtesy box (where you write the amount numerically), as we call it in the banking industry, really means nothing, nor does it mean anything under the Uniform Commercial Code - UCC states that the written amount supersedes the numerical (courtesy) amount, if there is a discrepancy.
