Hi. I'm shopping online for TurboTax Deluxe 2007 + State. Some websites are selling it very cheap.....like in the $25-$30 range......but these are weird software websites that I never heard of. Other "reputable" websites like Walmart.com, Buy.Com, Staples.com, etc. are selling it for $40-$50, etc.

It is safe to buy software from the no-name websites? Am I buying software that someone already downloaded onto their PC.....and then reselling to me??? Their "seller ratings" on PriceGrabber, etc. are good, so they seem to be reputable websites. But is their software legit?

Thanks!

Let me add something to my original posting.....I just checked EBay, and some sellers have it even CHEAPER than the no-name websites that I mentioned, above. How can these people sell the software so cheap???.....Again, is it legitimate software?

It's called OEM software and it can be a good deal but unless you're willing to take the risk that the software may not install or work correctly, I'd go buy the retail version. Research the online seller really well, return policy, description of the contents you'd be purchasing.

I considered doing this for my Quicken and Turbo Tax software and went with the retail version from Costco instead.

As a long time Turbo Tax user is it also possible that they bought these programs, used them for their own taxes and are now reselling them. They will still work. It is also possible that they are selling the 'free' versions Turbo Tax send to customers and then whey YOU go to use it you pay a fee. The other option is to go to the Turbo Tax website and use their online version which is less expensive then the software version.

Thanks for the input. I decided to scrap the completely no-name websites and checked Amazon. At least their sellers would be somewhat reputable b/c they're on Amazon.....I think. Anyway, if their Amazon listings say "Brand New, Factory Sealed, Full Retail Box, 100% Guarantee...and so on", and they have good seller ratings.....could this still be OEM software??? Their descriptions sound like it's legit and not software that they've already used or copied, etc.

I'm just trying to save a buck......but I want to be safe and not sorry!

Default Tax software on eBay?

The reason I stumbled upon this thread is because I was curious about the same question: where do they get their their software so cheap?
My curiosity is purely theoretical - I've been buying tax software from eBay for a few years now, never had a problem (once there was a problem with the seller advertising state software as included, which in fact was not, but he acknowledged the mistake and refunded the full price!).
The software usually comes without a box (CD only), but the CDs are ORIGINAL (not a bootleg), at least as far as I can tell. They may be OEM, I don't know. I always read the descriptions VERY carefully, making sure what's included (federal + state), and that I don't get ripped-off on shipping charges, and read the seller's feedback (from the wording it should be obvious if it's a phony or a comes from the real buyers). So, I'd say - go ahead and get it on ebay.

If any of you eBay sellers are reading this - would you share your secret - where do you guys get this stuff?

PS. Do not buy from the no-name download sites. They are usually scammers, and you will get..well...err...scammed!

If you are only looking to save a buck then use the ASP version on Intuit's (Quicken's) website - TurboTax Online. ASP is a web-based application that runs on their computer and not your's - all you need is your internet browser and connection.

They have a great comparison of their various packages on their website.

But - what do you call "no-name"?

e.g. is software.com ok? Which are ok and which are not?

If you use the online version just go to Intuit directly.
