Now several years later I feel silly for not calling and now I know better. At the time I was just mortified that I'd missed a payment that I didn't even stop to consider other routes. Now I double and triple check even my autopay accounts each month so much less likely to have an accidental missed payment, but if I do, I'll call the creditor first.

What is “about 5 days”? Is it 5 days or more like 30? My comment was about 2 days and your situation was not

I don't know what is confusing you. I wrote about two situations. One like what the OP listed and one that was over 30 days. Something that is like something would be close to the same. It's like you're being deliberately obtuse for no reason at all.

why sweat the affect on your score? are you planning on getting a loan soon?

Credit card companies usually allow you 1 dispute of late charges per year.

-keep an old credit card account even if you don't use it
-keep the high balance cards even if you don't use it

my fico went from 600s to 800s in 2 years, but I did pay down over $40k in credit card debt

Actually, yes. Although the time frame hasn't quite been established it's increasingly likely that we'll need a new home loan. Within a year or two.

Call and tell them what happened and ask to have the late fee refunded and the late payment dropped from your credit report .
You will probably get the 27 back, don't know about the credit co.

Call and ask them to waive it. 1-2 days is not going to ding your fico

its funny because i am someone who generally doesnt sweat that stuff because i have limited need for credit. so a situation came up with my credit and while i did address it; i could have been more proactive in getting it dealt with quickly. during that time, i decided i wanted a new credit card and a HELOC and was denied both. according to the letter from experian, it should be resolved by 1/18/18 and i should be completely free of any negatives but it would have been better to have had that done months ago.

The credit bureaus won't even accept a report that's less than 30 days late. So either your five day late payment was mistakenly reported as 30 days late, or you weren't made aware of the situation until the second payment was missed.

Also, I've had some rocky times in my financial history that have resulted in some late payments being reported, never did it result in anything close to a 75 point hit on my credit score. More like 10-15 points.

My experience is that if you pay 2 or 3 days late, the CC company will not even start to assess late fee on your account. Usually the late fee starts to accrue on the last day of billing cycle -- which is usually 4-5 days after the deadline for payment.

Why not put your cards on autopay (at least for the minimum required monthly payment)? Then you won't have to worry about accidentally forgetting a payment and being late.
