While watching a movie/series, all I really want is …
A straight story with a beginning, a middle and an end. Cut down on flashbacks and flashforwards - they’re annoying in excess.
Way fewer dark/semi dark interiors. Turn on the lights! Are the characters trying to save on their electric bills?!
No tints, please - blue, green, brown or any other color. Show us true color. If you must tint, make it subtle, like in The Godfather.
No shaky camera.
No sudden, short zooms or changes in focus. Are you listening, Succession?
TV series: I love series that tell one complete story per episode. I don’t like shows where they make you watch 10 episodes to find out who did it. Such shows invariably drag. If you must stretch the story out to multiple episodes, hold my attention by moving it along, like 24 did.
Keep music at the same audio level as dialogue.
Same with commercials. When the volume suddenly rises, most of us hit the mute button anyway.
I give everything a 15-20 minute test. If it hasn't captured my interest by then, then off it goes. Life is too short to watch movies you don't like.
Anything profane or deplorable...child molestation, rape, offensive language. Off it goes or out I walk.
Anything just plain stupid...bathroom humor, slapstick, Adam Sandler/Jim Carrey type of comedies.
Add to that most modern action movies with unrealistic scenarios and people, excessive CGI, gratuitous sex scenes, and explosions left and right. Boring.
Huge dislike are super quick action shots (fight sequences etc) like in the movie Transformers. A million things happening at once and hence difficult to follow and confusing.
Way too many characters thrown at you at once - my memory for names is bad enough, don't tax my brain with too many at the beginning.
Some shows / movies some characters "mumble" or at least seem to enunciate poorly - so I miss dialogue and hence plot.
I actually like profanity - if it's done properly. Real life people swear sometimes, it's part of our language. (Imagine if Tony Soprano never swore lol)
I love character development and complex persona. Where the good guys / gals are not cut and dried.
I like sexy, but agree that in this day and age sex scenes are not needed or even wanted. If I wanted to watch porn, it's ubiquitous on the interweb.
Definitely agree on not being able to watch movies where the camera is always moving / shaky. It makes me feel sick and hard to concentrate on the actual darn movie.
Oh and I love watching shows / movies shot in my city or in places I've lived. It's like... oh it's that pinball arcade that I use to hang out in all night
First and foremost is if the basis of the show conflicts with my basic beliefs. I do not watch L&O: SVU for I believe that sexual violence should not be a form of entertainment. I do not watch NCIS because I had to work with those people when they were NIS and I'll be DAMNED to watch a show that glorifies them. I did not watch Breaking Bad because my upbringing forbids watching shows that glorify crime. I do not watch shows that show domestic violence as no big deal, that display the lies (ie, "Come on, baby, you know I would never hit you," (as he displays his violent anger hitting and breaking things).)
Anything on FOX is dead meat and I will not watch anything on that network. Essentially, their programming style burned the bridges through the 90s and ending with Wonder Falls.
I will not watch something that depicts groups of people as idiots. I have never seen Galaxy Quest. Add to it slap stick comedy of where it is one joke after another and it is a NO. I have never seen the complete Airplane! and Austin Powers makes me sick.
That's a good start......I have to run.

All these!
I'll add something to do with volume. I HATE when shows volumize every little noise.
The sound of someone removing eyeglasses from their face. Listen for it during the next show you watch...they ALL add in sound effects for this action that, in real life, makes no noise whatsoever.
I agree with all of these! Here's my list of peeves;
Primitive style weapons in futuristic sci-fi. (Guns as we know them should be obsolete by then)
nudity for no reason, same with sex scenes
misappropriation of race in "historical" movies/series (I won't watch Cleopatra for this reason)
everybody speaks with a British accent
inserting props into a scene that hadn't been invented yet and other historical mistakes
chase scenes in big city streets and they never get caught behind a bus, an old lady driving, etc

This became a thing back in the 90's. I hated it.
