If you have to drive 70 miles to work why would you keep your car that gets 11 miles to the gallon? What auto even gets 11 miles to the gallon?
Maybe an old pick-up. I drive a 16' box truck loaded with tools for work, and still get 13-14 MPG with the big bugger.
$17,000 on credit cards isn't like my family at all either. I racked up about $1000 and cut the frigging things up. Now if I don't have it in the bank, I don't buy it. I am not paying those leaches interest and will do without first.
"We do well compared to some people out there, but like most we carry $17,000 in credit-card debt and don't have much in savings."
I don't understand why people have to justify themselves. They could have ditched the "but like most" and take responsibility for their inability to budget. In one part, they say they're doing well (assuming that means the hubby makes decent money), then they negate that statement with something as ludicrous as "like most, we have $17K in credit card debt". When I made $32K/year and lived on my own, I never EVER carried a credit card balance.
I'm guessing the vehicle is a truck for work, since he's in construction, so while that bill sucks - it's one of those "necessary evils". Maybe look to downsize the truck if he doesn't have to carry everything in it - or get a little commuter vehicle and rent a storage facility near his job for the truck. I'd be willing to bet that getting a used, inexpensive vehicle that gets 35MPG to put a bulk of the mileage on + paying for storage + paying for insurance on 2 vehicles would be cheaper than the $800 fuel bill (not to mention depreciation of a work truck -vs- an inexpensive commuter vehicle). They could probably shave $200-300/month from their current expenses and use that as extra payments on those crazy credit cards.
As far as the dog goes - they probably spoil the dog since they mentioned wanting kids. I'm sure it's a $3 plastic tiara. Heck, I think it's kindof funny.
when it comes to debt and natural disasters americans are fearless.
I guess if we are afraid of anything its each other.
