Why do people use debit cards to complete transactions? It seems really risky to me. Unlike credit cards, debit cards typically don't carry any type of fraud protection, and the rewards for using them are either paltry or absent altogether. Yet I constantly see/know people who whip out their debit cards for even the most basic of transactions.

Some people may use a Debit card as a means to control their spending habits.

A wallet full of greenbacks will disappear quicker then a small purchase at a time.

A pre paid CC card will work for some to control spending....a matter of choice....either one their choice.

I was at a small chain store here and a young guy (about 20) used the store CC ? to buy a soft drink....whatever.

I stopped using my debit card for exactly that reason.

In spite of all the doom and gloom naysayers, over the past 10 years that I have been using a debit card, I have had ONE instance of fraudulent purchases. I notified the bank immediately, and the charges were removed, the money put back in my account in a matter of hours, and a new card issued with a new number.
No problem.
Since I could not prove anything, I did not notify the national chain restaurant where the number theft probably took place.

I've had a problem twice in about 25 years. The bank took care of it quickly.

My bank currently does offer fraud protection, even for my debit card. There's no reason not to use it.

I use my debit card for 99.9% of all purchases. I rarely carry cash on me. No reason to. In fact, if I have cash on me, I am more likely to spend it.

It's not that banks don't offer protection, it's the fact that while under investigation, they freeze your account. Meaning you lose access to your money/ability to bank unless you have a 2nd account somewhere else

I use my debit card for 99.99% of all purchases. I've had my card compromised twice. Both times the bank contacted me, sent me a new card, reimbursed me the $ quickly and did not freeze my account.
