I tip 18% regardless unless the service was really rude/bad. If a server does a really good job I'll write a positive comment card or ask to speak to a manager and tell them how happy I was with our server. For me, the 18% doesn't matter if the bill is $500 or $5.
my standard operating procedure is to calculate 18% of the total and round up to the next dollar. if i am a little happier with the service, ill basically figure 20% and round up.
im not really interested in making my point in not liking the practice of tipping by taking it out on the servers. id rather them just be happy with what they get from me. legitimately happy not "you should be happy i gave you anything" happy.
I thought 15% is the normal amount, since when 18% and 20% is the normal amount. Talk about inflation. No wonder I saw an 18% at a Korean BBQ where I had to cook and burned myself.

if you dont even know how to cook properly then what makes you think you deserved that 18%?

honestly, it is a whole part of the thing i said earlier where customers are terrible at determining the appropriate wages for people. setting the wage by tipping shouldnt really be our obligation. we dont know what our tips amount to as far as a properly salary/wage and we dont even know what is the properly wage for a server anyway. we want to follow the set norms at a minimum and some want to be generous and in the end we have set wages in an ignorant manner.
Very funny, yuk yuk, hardy har har. I'm sure you're a big tipper.
I'm retired but worked at desks in offices and was paid a salary, and never had a tip jar for people to toss in more $$$ to pay me for doing the job I was already getting paid for.
I tip adequately to very well because I've worked as a waitress. I'll never forget being stiffed by a party of four because the kitchen was in chaos and meals were taking forever to be delivered. I guess they thought that they'd show me what they thought of the place.

I was told normal is 15% for years, good service is 20% for years, extra good is 25% for years. So whatever for years means for you doesn’t always translate to my for years.
