Hi - so for almost 25 years of having credit/ debit cards, they all felt the same and seemed to be of the same material and weight. Hard plastic with some flexibility.

So I received a new card in January....and it is much thicker and actually magnetic (only noticed when it stuck to my computer).....

and today I received a replacement card for another account and it is much thinner than any card I've ever had. It almost feels like the "fake" cards some solicitations in the mail come with.

So, when did these changes happens...and why?? Both new cards are, of course, chip cards.

Just want to point out that I don't have an issue with either card (or the old ones); just curious if anyone knows why "card material" is a change cards decided to make.

In order to make sure that all cards fit your wallet and point of sales machines, the International Organization for Standardization has developed certain standards for credit cards. The name given to it is ID-1 (also known as CR80).

The size of credit cards is 85.60 × 53.98 mm (3.370 ×2.125 in) and rounded corners with a radius of 2.88–3.48 mm, in accordance with ISO/IEC 7810#ID-1, the same size as ATM cards and other payment cards, such as debit cards. All card sizes have a thickness of 0.76 mm (1/32 in).

If every bank made credit cards that were of a different size or thickness, every merchant would have to have multiple swiping machines. Moreover, each machine would be proprietary to a particular bank.

The new Apple card has special care instructions, such as warnings against storing in leather and denim. Who would ever keep a card in their wallet or pants?

I have two metal cards now, and I love them. They are usually premium cards that also have great benefits. In my case, it's my Chase Marriott Premier and my Wells Fargo Propel. They see a lot of duty from me and are always in my wallet as they hold up very well.

My first Chase Marriott rewards card was definitely thicker than my other cards. In fact, that card was so thick that when we got our replacement cards (now seemingly normal thickness) I could not shred them in my cross-cut shredder like I usual do. Chase provided a special envelope to mail the cards back to them for destruction.

Anybody got a new Apple card yet ?

"Apple warns not to keep its credit card by leather. Or denim. Or loose change."
