Working on HELOC and my bank is asking for a recorded release of lien from a prior mortgage company (who sold it to my current one years ago).

Where should I be searching to find this information?

It should be recorded in the chain of title to your home. Some counties have those listings online, others you will have to visit in person. You should also have been sent a copy when the lien was cleared, although some lenders and servicers send the copy to the borrower and the borrower must record it.

Search for the "registry of deeds" for your county. It would have to be registered there. And why is your HELOC bank not doing a title search which would show this??

Perfect thanks, that did the trick and found the copy. Maybe they missed it or they were just saying its still on their list, who knows.

When a lien is paid off the lien holder sends the signed off lien to the county recorder of that county where is recorded in the buyers name. You will have received a copy after it was recorded, or you can obtain a copy from the county recorder for a small fee.
