For anyone interested, Fifth Third Bank is offering $250 for new customers opening a checking account and making direct deposit of $1,000.

I transferred to Citizens bank, will get $300 deposited next month.

One had to open new account, not have any existing accounts, and a direct deposit of at least $800/m.

My SSDI is well over that, and it was easy to open the account.

All that I use the account for is the DD of my SSDI, and the payment to medicare supplemental, and prescription premium.

I will add a payment out to my Roth IRA for the balance after mortgage, and the two insurances are taken out. I also add a small amount to my savings account there each month.

What really burns my britches is that the mortgage was sold/transferred/taken over by Citizens. Yet, I cannot make a mortgage payment AT the bank. Here.

If I had wanted to add a deposit of $10k to a savings account, I could have gotten an extra $200. But it pays literally nothing in interest, so I'll leave my efund at the Credit Union! I suppose the $200 might make it worthwhile, but I don't like moving money around, and it's a one time thing.

Other banks are offering similar deals in my area.
I don't think I've seen such offers since before 2008.

I will probably keep the account, unless I get another such offer. One reason I went with this Account is that the M &T bank branch near my house closed down, supposedly dye to "staffing issues". I don't understand that as I know 4 people, manager, account specialist, teller and a "concierge"...all if whom have been there over a decade, and ate too young to retire. Those are vore people for operations, and the other tellers have rotated in/out. I don't get it.

Citizens is a little further down the road, but just about as accessible as the credit union, being almost across from each other.

Best to you...

Love my home town bank. Local business , Local flair.

I have the 55 plus checking account. Gets 2% interest based on the average daily balance.
Free checking, Free atm, Free Visa ( well up to 500$)on the card . Online bill pay. And Notary . All free.

I prefer to stick with the local bank as they are less apt to "miraculously" add on fees or start upcharging for certain services after giving the bonus money. They get it back .....

I had a large online bank and a small local bank. I considered the large one my main bank and had SSA checks deposited there. After two months where the check did not show up, and SSA saying the bank refused it with no explanation, and not being able to talk to anyone easily at the bank, I switched the DD to the smaller bank. I will gradually move all my banking to the smaller one.

Just to clarify my post, I am not advocating that anyone become a long time customer of Fifth Third. I have no intention of doing so myself. This is just a way to make $250 quickly with relatively little effort.

I don't think requiring a direct deposit of any amount is easy terms.

I got a bonus for opening the account I intended to stay with using DD. I will open other accounts for the bonus if they don't require DD.

Alliant gives $100 after 12 monthly deposits (not direct deposit) of $100, so I agreed to that.

Citibank gave $400 to let them hold 15K for 2 months, so I did that.

many employers have self-service for payroll where employees can change their DD info themselves. Without that, I agree that a DD would be difficult to satisfy.
