My friend started an account in another state and moved to this state many years ago.

I was told if you transfer money to her account you should use a routing number for the original state (yes each account has a routing number based on what state you opened it in).

On Online banking, it says the routing number for "Direct Deposits and Electronic Payments" is the number for the original state. But the routing number for "Domestic Wire Transfers" is for the current state.

If you want to make an ACH transfer to her, which one would you use??

Also why are there two routing numbers for the account?

You use the routing number for the account you want the deposit to go to.

This account has two different routing numbers. Each one is for a different state.

Not every bank has different routing numbers for each state, in fact I’d wager most likely none of them do. Some banks do have regional numbers but not every state. Whoever you are sending money to should check with their bank to verify which routing/account number should be used.

If you wanted to send funds via ach why not use zelle? If it’s in network it will be instant and if not it will turn into an ACH transaction and neither of you would need to know the routing information.

Sheesh. Why not just write her a check?

Why overcomplicate things?

Yeah, his bank can write the check, and the recipient can do as she pleases with it.

I know for a fact that at least one bank has different routing numbers for each state.
I could write a check but it's a long story.

It’s always a long story when it comes to banking interactions for you

A bank/financial institution can have more than one routing number if they “inherited” one from a merger etc.

There can also be a difference for an ABA routing number for wire transfers etc., and an ACH routing number for use in the ACH network.
