Oprah cannot buy thinness. Biggest lesson for me. One of the wealthiest woman in the world and still unhappy about something she cannot control with money.

Life has a way of kicking us all in the butt from time to time. Money will buy you options and a sense of security, not happiness. The older we get the more we see that the important things in life cannot be purchased.

The other 20% is are the things that keep people alive and happy when they've lost everything else.

A short list is love, family, empathy, dreams, goals, the wonder of nature, and faith in a better tomorrow.

When you're rich, it's much harder to make true friends because there are so many people out there who are just after your money. If your idea of roughing it is a week in the Hilton, you really can't empathize with somebody who's just happy to put food on the table. When you're poor, your dreams can be endless, but when you're rich you can only dream of the things you can't buy. When a gardener takes care of your yard, you never get to appreciate the smell of the flowers or the feel of the dirt between your fingers. When you already live in an ivory tower, what else is there to aspire to?

Money provides a stability that you would otherwise not have provided you are smart with it.

The person barely scraping by who comes into $50k that enables him/her to buy a house not only provides a stable place to live for the family but probably adds years to the life of that person due to the removal of the incredible stresses that scraping by brings. I would say that is a form of happiness.

I'm sorry for your loss, OP. There is nothing more devastating than burying a parent.

What I want more than anything at my age is security. I want to know I will always have a comfortable place to sleep, food to eat and some distractions to keep my mind busy.

Security is everything especially when you recognize you are coming towards the end of your working life. We sold the McMansion and downsized to a house half the size we had. I love it, we can light, heat and cool it to our little hearts content. I never want to freeze to death in the dark or go without air conditioning in the summer and we keep our temperature at 70 year round.
