I've always been very curious to see how I compare to others my age in terms of retirement savings. I don't feel great about how much I have saved considering how old I am but curious to compare to others who are willing to share.

I'm 41 and have about $130,000 currently in my 401k, with another $5,000 or so in an IRA.

What's troubling is that I've saved and contributed regularly for most of the last 15 years or so. I'm currently contributing 10% of my salary and getting a 5% match from employer, which comes out to roughly $15k/year. But obviously investments have not performed well in the last, well, decade...

24 and I have $10,200 in mine. Not much, but I only started contributing 3 years ago, at 6%. My employer matched 6% until 2 years ago, and then 3% a year ago, and now is contributing nothing. I still pump 6% into mine, and have seen it TRIPLE in the last 6 months. I picked very aggressive plans to put my money in.

~70K 401k + ~15K Roth IRA- 32yo

Worked for 3 years after college hence the 15K in the IRA, went to grad school and just in the last 4.5 years when I started working again I've been maxing out my contributions + what the employer gives.

$40k in employer 401k and $40k in my Roth IRA. 28.

Don't feel bad my 401k since inception 4 years ago is +1.72%...not until December 1st 2009 was it even a POSITIVE number.

I'm currently 27, (soon will be 28), and have $60K combined my 401k and IRAs. Some IRAs date back to when I was in college (age 20), up until 2007 I thought it was good timing, I worked a little bit when I was 22, and 24, but my first permanent job was at age 25, I really started pouring money into the 401k after the Dow fell below 10,000, so most of my investments are actually up today. I'm back to putting 6% on 401k, 5% on Roth IRA now since I want to save up for a condo, and I can't really use the 401k for that.

I would say that I would feel good being at your age having that amount ($135K), but it seems that you've only recently started earning around $100K, so I can't really fault you for not saving more earlier, though I may be wrong.

In the last 10 years unless you had the foresight to invest in emerging markets or other specific sectors it would seem like you only get what you put in, with the Dow being close to what it was in 2000. Which kind of sucks considering inflation is maybe 30-40% in the 10yr period combined, and putting it in bonds might have gotten you 30% in that time period.

This last year or so many of the IRA/401k funds took about a 40% hit. Things are improving but I'm still down 15% from 'the peak'. I've put 10% away since I started working, and increased by a % a year after 40. In my early 40s and Im near 250k.

One thing I have done is changed jobs a couple times. I was able to rollover my 401k into a Rollover IRA at Schwab. I think I've gotten some better results than if I would have left it in the company plan.

I'm 24 and just checked mine a few days ago. I have a whopping... get ready for it... $1,300 dollars in it!

Now, I worked for a company that matched up to 4% for 11 months, where I contributed the maximum and got that return (my pay was quite low FYI). Now I am self-employed (have been for about a year now) and I've moved that amount into a IRA with an alright return. At the moment, however, I'm not contributing anything to it.

Not enough. My company use to match 50% 4 years ago or so when I first started working here. Stupidly I didnt contribute anything since I was young and wanted it all to myself . I started after working here for a few years and then recently stopped (company no longer contributes). Im not comfortable with only having 2 months of living expenses, so after I take care of that I will start pumping it up again. I am still in my 20s

I was never happy with the investment vehicles our 401k's used. Too safe, even in the aggressive growth side. So when we started our own business, I transferred ours out to Schwab and took control of it myself.

Doing well with it now.
