How long can horses go without water? There is this place that I pass by when Iam driving and they don`t have any water out for the horses. They seem like they are fed well, though.

I for years never put water out. The animals would walk back to the building and go inside for a drink. We lived next to a farm that dusted their crops so all animals were fed and watered indoors to cut the risk of contamination. If they look well fed, I'm sure they have access to water.

Just venturing a guess, but people who can make horses look well-fed are probably unlikely to be inadequately watering them.

very true. . . .a horse can not live long without water. . . if they look healthy, they have water. . . .

I have shipped horses long distance many, many times. We offer water every 4 hours. Most of the time they do not drink until the 3rd offer.

Depending on the size of the horse water needs will vary. Most of the horses I work with are large warmbloods, over 16.2 and near or just over 1000 pounds. On average they require 10 gallons of water intake daily, give or take depending on the individual. Smaller horses will need less.

Humans can live about a week without water unless it is extremely hot and dry. Since horses have no additional fat reservoirs like camels, I would assume their bodies function similar to ours. So if it has been a week and there are no signs of dehydration ( sunken eyes, dry mouth and nose, ribs and hipbones showing) they must be getting water. Is there a part of the field that you can't see or a building on the premises? Maybe a pond or stream just over a rise? I have seen automatic watering systems with just a concrete tub and a pipe coming out of the ground.

Some horses get finicky about their water too.

We once had a show horse that would only drink the water in it's own barn. When we went to a show, we had a water tank in the front of the trailer to accommodate it.

I'm not saying that it would NEVER drink water from anywhere else...I suppose it probably would when it really got dehydrated, but we never left it without that long.

LOL...I have the opposite problem with my show gelding.

He LOVED city water. I had to be careful, he would drink until he looked bloated in the show ring.

How big is the land they are on? A couple miles away from water is nothing to a horse.
