Our rats, Raven & Midnight, have been housed in a 20gal aquarium since we got them at the beggining of the fall. I decided to build them a wire cage for better ventilation. They love their new place! I built a tower, aprox 5-6' tall, 20"deep by 22" wide. I made two sepatarte hutches (the lower is not yet finished) as well as a space under the tower for storage. It's wonderful to have the ratties right at eye level, so much easier to clean the cage & interact with them:

Top floor: food & water dishes, house, hammock

Bottom floor: Still incomplete. I plan to add a half-shelf, and I bought some better ladders that I will put in for them to climb. I'm also going to make a better litter box (so far they are doing great with using the litter box!)

And some photos of the rats enjoying their new diggs:

Awesome job on the cage! I'm sure they're loving it. They are little cuties!

ratties make amazingly wonderfull sweet inteligent pets that are often easily trained to perform tricks, if well handled very sweet and IMPECABLY clean assuming you keep their cage clean...ive never met an animal that washes itself and its family as obsessivly as a ratty!

Thats a great cage! My kids had some boring gerbils, but after they died I talked them into getting a few rats. My buddy had one as a pet when we were kids and I loved them, so I got me some later on. We got ours a few years ago, and I became very attached to one of them (pip)...he was the greatest rat..my little buddy, but he died a few weeks ago They are great pets...almost as good as cats, but you get attached to them and they dont live very long at all.

Thank you. He may have been just a rat, but he had his own little personality, and was a great pet. We still have our other one, but he is just not as cool....but still a very good pet.
