Which tank do you prefer, a tank of mixed tropical fish like guppies and patties or a goldfish tank.

I think they both can be beautiful. I think it more depends on what you're looking for and upkeep. Goldfish require much more space per fish. It saddens me when I see them crammed into little tanks. Where tropical fish don't need as much space, so you can have more of them, but many of them school, so you'd need to be aware of that. Goldfish poop a lot more too, so they may be a bit messier. If you want a lot of fish, go tropical. If you want just a couple bigger fish go goldfish.

Can I have any tank I want? I'd prefer a salt water tank with some nice clown fish and a blue tang. Maybe a couple of sea horses.

I've had fancy goldfish and I enjoyed them. They have personalities and can be trained to do simple tricks.

I am thinking 20 gallon tank with two fancy goldfish, or 20 gallon tank with 10-20 guppies/platies.

A 20 gallon might be a bit snug for two goldfish. I would go 30 if you could. Maybe 10-15 guppies/platies for a 20 gallon. And be careful about males and females with the latter. They will multiple like CRAZY!

20 gallon is too small for two fancy goldfish. They grow fast. Goldfish tend to be dirty fish and they require a lot of filtration, plus water changing to keep their tank clean.

Goldfish fins are easily damaged if the water isn't clean and at the correct pH level. Fancy goldfish have huge fins and they look awful if their fins are scraggly. If you want fancy goldfish, make a commitment to work on that tank to keep it sparkling clean.

My goldfish were the size of oranges before the first year was out. Just because they are little in the pet store doesn't mean they are small fish.

Are you one of those people that go like "If you have 5 goldfish, you need 30,000 gallon tank!"

Are you one of those people who think "they are just fish" and disregard proper care guidelines from experienced keepers? If so, you don't need fish. I dealt with a lot of people like that when I worked at a pet store. It's very frustrating.

Research goldfish care. They grow big and need space. BARE minimum 15 gallons per fish.

a 20 should be ok for 2 fancies (NOT commets or koi) assuming plenty of water changes and good filtration but obviolosy no more than that.

personally...I like fish...it doesn't matter what kind.
im currently running a 55 gallon tropical community with neons and angels...
a 10 gallon Betta sorority (all females ina community, dot try thi one without doing homework)
a 10 gallon platy tank,
and currently 4 male bettas in various 1-2.5 gallon setups.

im currently working on a 55 gallon for my mum that will become an angel tank and may decide to go fancy goldies in my 55 after that (I love mature orandas and ryunkin....)

I think It realy depends on what your looking for in a tank...goldies are messy and require a lot more space per fish, they cant be trusted with live plants either, and are actually MORE high maintenece than any tropical ive owned barring discus...
but they are fun and adorable and can look very zen.
tropical fresh I find easier for maintence and can eb absolutely stunning when set up right...

I love salt too, ive got dreams of one day tanks that involve everything from discus, to salt, to lionfish to seahorses to Jellyfish lol.

my father got me started in the fish keeping hobby as a little one, and ive always had a 10 gallon tank in my bedroom so as I got older it just kinda exploded....
right now im purely limited by the amount of spac in y small living situation...but will admit my future home im planning on having built and there will be many a nook and crany for "built in" fishtanks of various kinds...

I cant imagine limiting myself to only 1 type of fish though...so...I don't think...if I could only have 1 tank...id limit myelf to goldies....
