Are male horses faster then female horses because their stronger, or are they slower because they weigh more?

Anybody somewhat familiar with horse racing?

Lots of male race horses are castrated. I know if I was going to be castrated, I'd run faster!

Well, stallions/geldings outnumber fillies by a large margin in racing.

So what does that mean? because their castrated their smaller, weight less and run faster or what?

Once they're castrated they focus on other things.

Once bulls are castrated they calm down and put on weight faster and retain it better since they're not out looking for action. It makes them quicker to get to market.


While horses aren't sold for food (at least in the US) the idea behind gelding is the same, it calms the horse down. The downside for racing is that you geld a horse and he becomes a winner then you just lost any potential stud fees you might have had.


Several geldings have won the Kentucky Derby over the years.
