They are beautiful - I'm going to see if I can get a picture of the horse I helped rescue from a terrible fate - a percheron who was a by product of the PMU industry. Don't even get me started on that whole thing.....

Hey you guys. I've been interested in your thread but I'm not an expert.

We had horses when I was little. I had a pony, a quarter horse... and then we got a beautiful black colt from a horse trader. Ace was too young to ride so we fed him and watched him grow.

One day we went down to see him and he was down in his stall. It turned out he had distemper and had to be put down. I was so devastated by this that my parents didn't get me another horse.

So, I hope there is a way you can avoid the expensive mistake that my parents made. I have to wonder about the man who sold him to them. Just be sure that you're dealing with reputable people and learn as much as you can prior to purchasing your horse. Do your homework!

After I posted this I pulled up horse distemper.... it seems it isn't necessarily fatal these days which makes me wonder if they've advanced treatment or if there was even more wrong with my horse than I was told. I was young and it was a long time ago. I don't know but I remember clearly that my beautiful young horse was put down before I could even ride him....

Good luck on finding your dream horse!

How long did you have him til he got sick & died? Strangles...yep now they open the swelling & drain the pus. But they also have proventive shots now. Highly contagous from horse to horse. went thru the barn where my girls were boarded one summer. They did not get it as they were vac before I boarded them. No horse died but sure was a long summer as as soon as 1 horse was over it another would get it!! That what happens when people think animals dont need shots to prevent illness.

I rescued a dog with distemper he died with in a week...was hard to watch.

It was a long time ago. Several months...???

It seemed like a long time because we were waiting for the day until we could ride him. He was beautiful.

I do believe it was several months. Wonder what the incubation period is for a horse to become that ill from it?

My parents weren't "horse" people. (or even farmers) So, I've always believed that they got taken by a "horse trader" ...

Not sure ....But was told that it was in the ground in that stable and ALL in comming horses needed to be vacinated. They held lessons & shows too [anything horse!!] Before they had horses they were a dairy farm. And until this happened No shots were required they were real laxed. I think they were in the horse business 5 yrs before this happened. Was a hard lesson all the way around.

My 1st horse & later Baby & April were all purchased from dealers. I never had a problem they were all healthy.

I would love for the OP to get a horse from rescue when she is ready. Too many horses are being given away too. The dealers I delt with match the horse to the rider in skill & training. Actually if they got a bad rep for selling sick horses or mismating riders skill to the horses they would not be in business long.

Excellent idea. I do believe she could find the horse of her dreams. And, from what I know about equine rescue groups,... they really do work with people to make a good match.

I've read stories of some of these horses that have been saved from execution and how these beautiful animals have been mistreated.

Horses are wonderful, loyal pets...

Wish I could afford to own one...
