Do not get a rabbit or any other small animal if you have intents of putting it in a cage with the intent of looking at it and not becoming social with it! It's not fair to the animal!

The reason I am venting about this is because I recently rescued two rabbits that were living in HORRIBLE outdoor living conditions. The owner got them and decided that the only thing they were good for was breeding them! They were in tiny cages outside with modly pellets and nasty water. Their cages did not even have the proper bedding needed to keep the rabbits safe. One rabbit even had hutch burn from being cramped in tiny quarters while her urine scalded her bum.

I only managed to walk away with two but I would have walked away with all if I could! It makes me sick to my stomach thinking about the others that are still living there!

And I'm not just venting about owners like this, I'm also venting about those who get these animals and keep them indoors in the same living conditions! Rabbits need fresh water daily, good pellets and good fresh hay. All animals who are in cages need to be kept clean in order to be able to thrive.

Okay, off my soapbox now.........

Hi I so agree with you and also that goes for birds too . they need social interaction to be happy . I have rescued several parrots from some of my sisters rentals . she and I went into the rentals only to find some parrots with overgrown beaks and overgrown talons and you name it we found it . also found a pet rat and my son took that . also my sister has found cats left inside an abandoned house and with little or no food or water and have also found deceased animals in the house . it is disgusting and yes even small animals need proper care .

Good topic because Easter is coming.
Don't buy your kids chicks, bunnies whatever...unless you are responsible owners.

EXACTLY! So many parents make an impulse buy during easter for those cute little chicks and bunnies and so many end up dead or dumped off in shelters because the "cute" phase wears off.

On a personal note, I purchased my rabbit from a pet store and low and behold, I found out later that the rabbit was only around 7-8 weeks old. There should be a law in place that prohibits the sale of rabbits this age and pet store employees should be properly trained to handle and give out information to buyers. Especially when it comes to the dwarf breeds because they have fragile skeletal and digestive systems.

That's sad! My mom has three rescued cockatiels right now that had mites and messed up beaks when she got them. Fortunately, they have settled in nicely and are being properly cared for now.

This, and these situations are all horrible, not only sad but very very Disturbing.
Any animal abuse and neglect is uncalled for, unacceptable that "we"/humans regard them- animals as property and as they are let to breed, then there lies the profit... to get $ from an animal, when no care and or respect is given to another living being.

They need to be loved and cared for. Yes I agree, people could just keep rabbits and other small animals in the house and not care for them either, being ignored and neglected in the corner of the room/house just left there...in the cage

OH how I wish I could just rescue all these animals so they are free of this type of situation. for them to be loved and comfortable and safe...
If that could only be my full time and only job, I'd gladly accept and to educate others too.

I agree. But I don't like seeing any animal pinned up, tied up, chained up, locked up...if you don't have time, space or love for it, do the humane thing, don't own one.

Thanks for the responses!

My rabbits are dear to my heart and spoiled rotten!

The first netherland I got has been treated like a baby. He's let of his cage off and on during the day during the work week and played with. On the weekends, he spends a majority of time out of his cage playing with his toys and his box. He has this thing where he rings his bell with his teeth when he wants attention. He is totally rotten to the core! LOL

The same goes for the new rabbits. Poor things, they have not been loved or held at all in their lives until coming to my home. They are still a little scared by the human touch but are coming around much better now.
We are taking them out as often as we can but not as much as our other until they trust us a little more. I made the mistake with trying to let the smallest one play around and she darted off. It took us 45 minutes to catch her in the house.

My reason for this post was to educate people about the proper care of rabbits! People don't realize how affectionate they can be and how much humor you can find in their actions.

I wonder if anyone's ever done the same kind of post for goldfish. LOL I know it sounds silly but they can suffer too and they're probably thee most abused (through ignorance of their proper care) 'pet. But that's another thread (and I hope someone who knows their fish will do one).

I would love have rabbits, rescues, but I will not cuz I will not have enough time, and that would go against me and my view of the quality of life they need, deserve and that I would want to give.

yes, no time, don't have any.

usc_gal98,
wow, have you had rabbits in your life for a while?
That's great! Glad that you rescues some!
How many do you have right now and do you have other animals or just a rabbit house!? how fun!

I actually have never had one, but they are so cute and cuddley, although not for me at this time in my life.
