So, 4 days ago, I accidentally left my fence door open. When I realized it was opened, I closed it and looked for my sulcata tortoise. And it just happened that I had taken off the little tracking device on him earlier that day to change the battery and hadn't put it back on him. I began to scour the yard to find him to no avail. After three days of searching around the backyard, the forest behind the backyard, and up and down the neighborhood, yesterday I finally gave up on ever finding him ever again. I had to accept the cruel fact that my little one wasn't coming back.
Well, this morning I opened the door to leave and guess who I found on the other side.
So, either someone found him and knew I had a sulcata so decided to return him to me super-hero style or he decided to return home.
That said, I'm never taking off the tracking device off him ever again.
Years ago we had the neighborhood desert tortoise, she made rounds thru the neighborhood - my house one year the end of the block next. Everyone thought they owned her, but really she owned all of us.
Wow, that's terrific!! Just out of curiosity (as I know nothing about keeping tortoises) how does the tracking system work?
Haha, it's really just one of those remote finder thing where you press the button and it beeps to let you know where it is. I bought one with the range of a football field so that I could find him whenever I want to. He's fenced in in the back yard. The beeper is just there as a backup.
I'm glad he's back OP, but I have to admit when I read your post I just had this vision (strip cartoon style) of a tortoise taking three days to go around the block.

What I do is I ducttape the thing on his back.
Oh, you simply must post a picture of him wearing his technology. I'll bet he looks quite dapper!
Glad he came back. We had someone steal the first one we'd ever owned years ago. Still miss him. He was nearly as social as Sherman.
Be real careful. There are lots of sickos that will steal them to do horrible things to them. And of course the idiots that steal them thinking they want a 'little' turtle for themselves, not realizing that in a few years they'll have a 100+ pound tortoise. Or they want to breed them and make money.
People make me sick. We don't tell people around us about ours just to keep them safe.
