I'm not from Philly but if you want to avoid gang violence you may want to avoid the low income areas. North Philly comes to mind.

Philly isn't a big organized "gang" city.

There are crews organized around neighborhoods and they go by names like "Forty Ninth Street Crew" but the whole bloods and crips thing isn't big in Philly like it is in other cities.

Most of the violence is drug dealers shooting each other. There are definitely problems with too many illegal guns and kids with nothing better to do, but anybody talking about "gangs" doesn't really know what's going on.

I agree that some of the areas that you mention can be challenging but I'm wondering if you're over-generalizing on others.

What communities in the Northeast do you feel are affected by gangs? What sections of Center City do you feel are influenced by gangs once the sun goes down?
