How is this area of town? I know it's not as safe as some places, but is it safe enough?

No, it's not safe. I know someone who lives near there and he has had break-ins to his home at night while he was there (fortunately it was an unarmed female thief who only took several hundred dollars of stuff without hurting him) as well as bums threatening him at night when walking home. And he lives a couple blocks east of there actually, by the time you get to 42nd I would imagine it's much worse as the yellow shirt Drexel patrol doesn't go out that far.

Default It's ok

It's actually not that dangerous. I grew up at 38th and Baring in the mid-90s, and for me, anything west of Lancaster was the boundary, but that is simply not the case any more. Look at how much the community organizations have worked to keep up Saunders Park, and look how much renovation has been done to the rowhomes around them. It's been mentioned in some other threads just how much improvement the area east of Lee Field, south of Spring Garden has seen recently- take a walk down Holly Street, the next side street on baring east of 42nd St, and look how well its maintained. Look at the flower gardens in the empty lots. Look at the new tree plantings. The new paint jobs. The area is definitely transitional, but to label it a ghetto is unfair.

Yes, maybe it is not a ghetto, but it's definitely close to the ghetto and the crime spills over. I was eating at a Thai restaurant there on Lancaster Ave and three females ran in and tried to rob the cash register (unarmed, thankfully). The Thai waitresses yelled at them and they took the mint candy tray and ran away. It could have been worse.
